Aiming for success and excellence was always been our goal every time
we join prestigious competitions like Press Conferences and we made it to
the point that we will win and bring home the bacon.
Since our school joined this competition, we never missed a year that
we didn’t receive most of the major awards in distinct categories such as
news writing, feature writing, science writing, editorial writing, copyreading
and headline writing, sports writing, editorial cartooning and photojournalism
in Division Schools Press Conference (DSPC) and represented the Division of
Rizal in Regional Schools Press Conference (RSPC) and even in the National
Schools Conference (NSPC) and fortunately if not yearly we also bagged major
awards in RSPC and last January 2017 our former student and campus journalist
Limuel John M. Limbago won 1st Place in News Writing Category in the 2017
NSPC which was held in Pagadian City Zamboanga del Sur. This incident made
our beloved school Francisco P. Felix Memorial National High School popular
nationwide.
Our school never stop searching for new techniques that we can use in
honing the skills of our campus journalists and to produce more breeds of
champion.
II. Significant Accomplishment/s within last two years (June 2016-June 2018)
(Description of the Project/Work Accomplished, Strategies/Activities Done that
have significantly impacted the performance of the learners and the school as
well.)
Pursuant to Republic Act No. 7079 also known as the Campus Journalism
Act of 1991 which aims to “promote the development and growth of campus
journalism as a means of strengthening ethical values, encouraging critical and
creative thinking, and developing moral character and personal discipline of
the Filipino youth and to further enhance the journalistic skills of the students,
we designed a program called ‘PENCIL-ISM’. It is a training workshop created
for the campus journalists so that they will become well-equipped and
updated in the different innovations with regards to the changes in campus
journalism. This program aims to:
The activities during this training workshop include lectures and contests
for individual contests (news writing, sports writing, feature writing, editorial
writing, editorial cartooning, copyreading and headline writing,
photojournalism, science writing) and group contest (school paper lay outing)
including special sessions (school paper management and radio broadcasting
and script writing) which are all included in division, regional and national press
conferences.
To make sure that the campus journalists will s learn in the program that
we have designed for them, we invited resource speakers that has a profound
knowledge and experience in journalism. Mostly they are our former
students/staffers who have excelled in their respective categories and
received numerous awards in Division Schools Press Conference, Regional
Schools Press Conference and National Schools Press Conference during their
time.
After the lecture the participants are expected to submit a written
output of their individual work in all categories. For the group category, they
are expected to produce a school paper with four major pages, the news
page, editorial page, feature page and sports page. For radio broadcasting
and script writing, they need to come up with a radio broadcasting production.
Many of our former journalists who undergo the said training are already
successful in their chosen career. Most of them are already working as news
writers and field reporters in some of the prestigious TV Networks in our country.
It provides check and balance for the administrators and the students,
Campus journalists and publications become the students’ eyes in things that
are hidden in the campus.
It can never be emphasized that the key for perfect writing is practice.
Practice makes perfect, the old saying goes. Campus journalism provides the
avenue for students to develop their writing skills. The writer would not want to
be the subject of public ridicule occasioned by bad grammar and poor
vocabularies. Workshops and training program are very vital in developing
students’ writing skills.
The campus writers are trained and given exposures to hone their
talents. Press Conferences held every year starting with the division level it goes
to the regional level and finally the national level. Campus writers who qualify
to the regional level have the chance to visit various places in the region and
those who qualify to the national level have the chance to visit places all over
the Philippines.
Not all the students can afford to buy this equipment because of lack
of resources but luckily with the help of our school administrators and some of
the stakeholders, we can able to purchase laptop, camera and other
equipment which were very essential during competitions and trainings.
IV. Innovations (If any, original, creative programs, projects, activities made in the
last two (2) years in connection to the award category) 1 page abstract.
The incumbent editor-in-chief together with the other editorial staffs will
have go to the classrooms of all grade levels to conduct a 15-minute
recruitment, this is of course with the permission of the school principal and all
subject teachers to get the names and contact numbers of the students who
were interested to join the said training/workshop. They will be given a parent’s
permit to let us know that their parents allow them to join the training/workshop
for their safety and security and it will be collected during the first day of the
training for record purposes.
With the collaboration of the former staffers of our school paper, who
acted as trainers and facilitators, an intensive and rigid training will be given to
all participants. They will give inputs and share their best practices to the
category assigned to them. A one hour talk and one hour write shop was
allotted for each speaker. A maximum of three speakers was only allowed in a
day so that the participants will grasp everything that what was fed to them
by the speakers.
The participants must complete the five-day training. If they were not
able to attend one session, automatically they will not receive a certificate of
completion and participation and they will not also entitled to receive an
award of recognition if ever they will win in any of the category they have
joined because in this training/workshop we were also teaching them
importance of self-discipline and dedication to any work that they will do in the
future.
An awarding ceremony will be conducted at the last day of the activity
to duly recognize commendable performance of the participants all
throughout the training. They will receive certificates of appearance,
participation and recognition to compensate the challenging work they have
exerted.
After the Summer Training/Workshop, a Local School Press Conference
(LSPC) will be followed and it will be held at the first or second week of June
after the opening of classes. LSPC is conducted for the school paper adviser to
decide easily what category that the student/writer will best fit in. A regular
training will follow the LSPC everyday after class so that the students will be
able to attend their classes.
