Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The activity that I have planned for the students will support all learners and it allows the students to respond
at their own pace using their own device. This activity enhances learning by using technology to review the
information from the book and help the students get an idea of the main information in a book.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
Before the SRT activity, we will have discussed the basics of summarizing a story and we will have read the
book Second Grade Holdout by Audrey Vernick. I will then tell the students that we are going to play a game
to help us summarize the book we just read.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☒ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

during the SRT activity, the teacher will display the Kahoot! On the interactive white board and the students
will join in from their own device (any device that accesses the internet). The teacher will read the question to
the students and the students will answer with the answer they think is best from their device. After each
question is answered, the teacher will move on to the next question until the class has been through all of the
questions.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10): all
questions are multiple choice
1. Who was the main character’s best friend?
2. The main character and Tyler were kings of what?
3. What is one reason the second grade is not for the main character?
4. Where was the main character afraid he would find robbers and bad guys?
5. What did the main character think he could get for being the smartest first grader in the school?
6. Where does the main character go to school?
7. Where does Tyler go to school?
8. What grade does the main character really want to be in?
Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?
☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
I will review the correct answers with the class after the SRT activity because I want the students to know the
correct information and I want them to be able to go back into the reading or book and find the information,
and the more this is reviewed and practiced, the better chance of the student knowing ho wot do this.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the SRT activity, the teacher will review all of the questions and the correct answers and will show the
students how to go back to the book and find the correct answer for each question. If the students have any
questions or issues with the information, the teacher will handle those on a case by case basis.

How will the data be used?

The data that will be collected as a result of this SRT activity will be what each student answered to each
question as well as an overall report on how the class did on each question. This data will be used by the
teacher to determine which students need some more help with summarizing and understanding key details
from the book and which students are ready to move on to something else. The information collected will not
be used to assign a grade nor will it be shared with students and parents to monitor individual progress as I
od not feel it is needed just from this assignment. If a case arises where I feel the parent and/or student need
the data from this activity, then I will share at that time. I will discuss the overall class data with the class to
help them see where everyone went wrong and what we need to work on as a class. I will use this data to
differentiate instruction by doing different activities with different students/ groups of students based on
where they struggled with this activity.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. I hope my students learn more about understanding
key information from books and I hope that they learn to stay on task with the speed of this game.
Reflective Practice: I feel that this activity could help student learning because the students will be more
engaged playing a game and using a tool that is not brought out as often. I could extend this lesson and have

the students write a summary using this information and what they learned about key information from the
book.
