EXPERIMENTS WITH ELECTRICITY AND MAGNETISM

A. SIMPLE DC MOTOR
Work procedures :
1. Build your own motor.
2. You will need to give the ring a slight tap to get it spinning.
3. If it won’t spin in one direction, tap it in the other direction to get it going.

B. MAGNETIC FIELD LINES WITH AN INDUCTOR

Work procedures :
1. Make holes speed 1 mm apart and feed 16 AWG magnet wire through the holes.
2. Connect alligator clips to the ends of the coil.
3. When no current is flowing through the wires there is no magnetic fields for the iron
powder to align with
4. Connect the coil to the power supply and source 4-5 Amps to the coil. Warning : High
electrical current isn dangerous. Do not attempt unless you know what you are doing.
5. Watch the iron powder align to the magnetic field lines of the coil. Now, magnetic field lines
from electric current.

C. MAGNETIC FIELD LINES WITH NEODYMIUM MAGNETS

Work procedures :

1. Prepare a Neodymium magnet, then enclose it in two books

2. The HVS paper on top of the magnet sandwiched above, then sprinkle with iron
powder
3. Notice the pattern formed

D. MAGNETIC FIELD LINES IN A FLUID

Work procedures :
1. Place the plastic straw through the hole in the container
2. Use clay to seal the bottom
3. Add vegetable oil to the container
4. Add iron powder into the fluid
5. Secure the lid and seal it with clay
6. Watch the field lines slowly align in the oil

E. CHAIN REACTION WITH STEEL WOOL AND 9V BATTERY.

Warning : this reaction can start fires. Use caution.
Work Procedures :
1. The coating of the steel wool ignites from the heat and continues the reaction.
2. When the 9V is applied to a small string of steel woll, the low resistance allows a hight
current.
3. This high current heats up the steel to the point of melting.

F. RANDOMLY OSCILLATING MAGNETIC PENDULUM (R.O.M.P) WITH ONE REPELLING MAGNET.

Work Procedures :
1. Oscillations with magnetic attaraction.
2. Now add multiple repelling magnets.
G. STATIC ELECTRICITY DETECTOR
Work Procedures :
1. Build the circuit on a prototypig board
2. Connect the battery and test the circuit
3. Once the circuit is tested, you can solder it onto a wofer board
4. The fial product is a small potble detector
5. You can also detect static charge from other objects such as a charged rubber ballon.

H. MAKE A COMPASS AT HOME

Work Procedures :
1. Rub the magnet in one direction on the needle tonmagnetize it.
2. Mark one sde of the leaf to orientate as magnetic North.
3. Float the leaf on the waterband place the needle on top.
4. The magnetized needle orients to align with the earths magnetic field.
5. You can use a real compass to verify which way is north.
6. A nearby magnetic field can easily influence the needle

I. MANUAL COUNTER
A seven segment display is made of 8 LED’s.
Work Procedures :
1. Each LED segment or decimal point can be powered individually
2. Pressing the button increments the logic state of the IC
3. The logic state of the IC determines which LED’s turn on to represent a decimal number.
4. This counter counts a single digit and resets after 9.

J. MINI TESLA COIL

Warning: Do not use near sensitive electronics
1. The tesla coil can be hidden in a box as a parlour trick
2. 1 st. Build the primary and secondary coils
3. The coils are powered by this small circuit.

 This is the circuit that drives the oscillations.

1. The helping hands fixture acts as aheat sink for the transistor which may get hot.
2. This coil can easily excite a 4 Watt florescent bulb to light up
3. The effect is even more noticeable in dim lighting.
4. It is even strong enough to light up two 4 Watt florescent bulbs wirelessly.
