FLOODING
The floods of 2013-14 remain vivid
in the memories of many people
across the borough of Maidstone.
Properties were damaged by flood
water which entered homes on the
morning of Christmas Day.
Although it was reported that only
41 properties were flooded the
water restricted access for many
residents and businesses which
were cut off over the festive period.
Should the worst happen again,
the Environment Agency and
Maidstone Borough Council
are working with residents and
businesses to prepare and as part
of that are asking you if you would
be able to help by becoming
a volunteer Flood Warden?
Currently 1,679 properties are
at risk of flooding from the River
Medway, but only 22% of people
in Maidstone are signed up to the
Environment Agency’s free Flood
Warning Service.
Some areas that are in severe risk
of flooding including Yalding, have
seen (or will see), flood prevention
measures installed. The work is being
carried out by the Environment
Agency with central government
funding as part of the Middle Medway
Flood Partnership of which Maidstone
Borough Council is a member

A brand-new radio
station is coming
to town as Maidstone
Radio is scheduled to launch in December.
The project which aims to ‘bring Maidstone
back together’ is the result of a chance
conversation between a group of friends
who decided to follow their passion for
radio and “make it happen.”
The new community service which has
a purpose-built radio studio based at the
Maidstone Community Support Centre in
Marsham Street, will focus on the people,
businesses, charities and groups from
across the borough. It will be on-air from
7am to 10pm seven days a week, it will
include a combination of live and pre-
recorded programmes including interviews,
features and a good mix of music.

and newspapers can be a struggle.
Accessibility options on computers
and phones can be a huge help for
visually impaired users, however, this
isn’t a preferred format for some people.
Losing your sight can have a massive
impact on the way you live your life, from
getting around and cooking, to retaining
friendships and feeling isolated.
For almost 100 years, Kent
Association for the Blind has been
supporting sight impaired people
to live independent lives.

The project relies entirely on donations
and is looking for volunteers to become
involved – including presenters,
journalists, a station manager and
fund-raisers. According to the station
co-founder Stuart Baker: “You don’t
need experience – skills can be taught
– all we need is people who have bags
of enthusiasm and a willingness to get
involved.”

"Maidstone Borough Council wants to create a place where
everyone aspires to be physically active, however we need
to find out what that means to different groups of people.
For some it may mean going to a gym, for others it may be
taking part in a Parkrun, or a game of bowls.
“In the future people may want to take their health and
fitness in different ways to how they do now. We need to
keep pace with changing needs and this review gives us
the opportunity to understand exactly what residents want
from their local leisure service and to incorporate those
elements into the next leisure contract.
“We are encouraging everyone to take part in the survey,
residents and visitors, as the results will affect the lives
of everyone who lives in or visits the borough.
“Maidstone’s current leisure services contract with
Maidstone Leisure Trust and Serco ends in 2024. We work
very well with both organisations and will continue to do so
during the next five years. This review is all about being as
prepared as possible for the opportunities available to us
when we enter the contract review period.”

Breaking the silence on domestic
abuse in Maidstone
Maidstone Borough Council is
working with partners to raise
awareness of domestic
abuse and support
victims, to ensure
as many people as
possible know how
to get help if they
need it, or assist
others to do so.
In the last 12
months, 2,861
crimes were recorded
in Maidstone, which
involved domestic
abuse, as more people
are having the courage to
come forward and report
the crime.
To continue to raise awareness Maidstone Borough
Council’s Community Protection team has teamed up with
Kent Police, Kent County Council and local domestic abuse
charities in a series of campaigns to address the issue.
Work started with a group of Maidstone GPs and health
professionals at an event in July to highlight that domestic
abuse is not just physical violent abuse. The workshop
described what to look out for and where patients can
go for help.

We are all responsible for getting rid of our
own rubbish, however big or small. Whether
it is dropping a wrapper out of a car window,
abandoning a vehicle, or leaving an old sofa
by the side of the road.
Leaving it for someone else to deal with is a public
order offence and punishable with a fixed penalty
fine or even imprisonment.
The Waste Crime team at Maidstone Borough Council
face this type of crime every day, dealing with flytipping,
illegal dumping of commercial waste, abandoned
vehicles, chewing gum and cigarettes thrown on the
ground to overflowing restaurant bins. The team also
check the waste carrier licences for vans and lorries.
Since March 2018 the team has seized 23 vehicles, three
of which have been crushed and five have been sold
with profits going back into local services. The team has
issued 14 fixed penalty notices for fly tipping and six for
low level fly tipping. Four more incidents are currently
being investigated.

Theatre said: “Every year we audition in July
for anyone who wants to be in the panto. This
year we had 220 children audition in one day.

steering the way forward for drivers
Eleven community groups
in Maidstone have been awarded
a £250 grant each to connect with
the wildlife and nature on their
doorstep and improve local areas.
The grants are part of the Maidstone
Borough Council ‘Go Green Go Wild’
initiative which aims to improve
biodiversity across Maidstone.
Formally constituted groups with
an existing affiliation with a park,
open space or community garden
in the borough could apply. Funding
was considered for wildlife projects,
tree planting, biodiversity
improvements, clean-up projects,
materials, equipment, tools, seeds,
bulbs and plants.

Wild initiative, she said: “We are
delighted so many groups have
come forward and applied.
These projects will make a real

Memory Walk
On a stunning Sunday morning in
September Maidstone played host
to a Memory Walk which saw over
1,400 people take part, raising money
for charity by making an eight-
kilometre trek around the beautiful
surroundings of Mote Park.
The annual event is organised by the
Alzheimer’s Society charity which
co-ordinates sponsored walks for
all ages and abilities to unite people
together and raise money to defeat
dementia.
Among the walkers taking part
was MBC Leader Councillor
Martin Cox who said:
“It was so moving to see so many
people attend the Memory Walk
in Maidstone and I was proud to
be part of it.
“However, while It is so positive
that so many feel they are able
to raise money and awareness
for this devastating condition,
I feel that, in the not too distant
future, every person in the land
will know a family member
or friend lost to some kind
of dementia.
“I raised just over £1000, and
would like to say thank you
to every person who donated.”

Maidstone Mayor, Councillor Marion Ring, has been
getting to know even more people from the borough
by inviting them for afternoon tea.
Around 180 residents joined the Mayor – who has been

a cuppa to help her understand what is important to them
and what they need in their communities.
Cllr Ring said: “I am absolutely delighted to have
been able to host the very first Mayoral Tea
Parties and was thrilled to see so many join

Mayor’s Charity Community Chest:
Councillor Ring has introduced a Mayor’s
Charity Community Chest which will raise
money from donations, events and raffles
to go into a community charity fund. This will be
distributed at the end of her year to smaller charities
and community groups to help with their particular project/
needs. The Mayor feels this will help a wider number
of bodies who may not otherwise receive help.

Maidstone Borough Council is encouraging all residents
to go cashless and pay bills by direct debit or by using the
online payment method.
Carrying large amounts of cash can be unsafe. As the
majority of people now have access to a bank account or
manage their financial affairs electronically online services
are becoming a more popular, secure and convenient way
to pay for council services.
Currently 77% of residents pay their Council Tax by direct
debit and more than 136,000 payments were made to the
Council online or using the automated payment line in 2018.
