With the advances of technology, traditional way of communication is substituted by the use of
social media such as Facebook or Twitter. Despite some unavoidable drawbacks, I hold the
opinion that this replacement culminates in more benefits.

On the one hand, keeping contact on social media replaces direct interaction is to some extent
disadvantageous. Firstly, the over-reliance on those online platforms inevitably discourages real
communication. Instead of meeting and exchanging information face-to-face, people may depend
on online conversations to update changes in their social contacts, gradually loosening the
closeness. For instance, hardly will friends have any gatherings when status posts become a
common way to keep in touch. Secondly, this alternative may pose many threats to users
since computer hackers can steal vital information they have shared or updated in their accounts,
without mentioning the risks stemming from seeders and unreal users on the cyberspace.

On the other hand, I still argue that when direct way of contact is superseded by the use of social
media, it brings more benefits. Chief among that is to erase geographical barriers and therefore
facilitate communication with others hundreds of miles far away. For example, an oversea student
can easily talk with his relatives by text-messaging or a businessman can make video-
conferencing with his international counterpart, regardless of a long distance. Furthermore, this
replacement accelerates the speed of transmitting information. Conventional way to keep in
touch takes a person hours to go to an appointment and deliver information, but with social media,
he can instantly send this news to the receiver’s inbox or even make it go viral.
In conclusion, albeit detrimental to real communication and risky to users, the use of social media
to replace face-to-face contact is of more benefit.

Với sự phát triển của công nghệ, cách giao tiếp truyền thống đang dần được thay thế bởi việc sử
dụng các phương tiện truyền thông mạng xã hội như: Facebook hay Twitter. Mặc dù xu hướng
này gây ra một vài tác hại không thể tránh được, nhưng tôi vẫn giữ quan điểm rằng sự thay thế
này mang lại nhiều lợi ích hơn.
Một mặt, việc giữ liên lạc qua những phương tiện truyền thông mạng xã hội thay thế những cuộc
giao tiếp trực tiếp gây ra một vài tác hại. Thứ nhất là, sự quá phụ thuộc vào những cuộc trò
chuyện ảo này không thể tránh khỏi việc làm giảm đi những cuộc giao tiếp thật. Thay vì gặp mặt
và trao đổi thông tin trực tiếp, mọi người có thể phụ thuộc vào những cuộc giao tiếp trên mạng
khiến cho cách tiếp xúc với xã hội thay đổi, và từ đó dần dần làm mất đi mối những mối quan hệ
thân thiết. Ví dụ như, bạn bè sẽ hiếm khi có những cuộc tụ tập khi mà những bài đăng về tình
trạng của họ trở thành một cách phổ biến để giữ liên lạc với nhau. Thứ hai là, sự thay thế này có
thể gây ra những mối đe dọa cho người dùng bởi vì những kẻ trộm dữ liệu máy tính có thể ăn cắp
những thông tin quan trọng mà họ đã chia sẻ và cập nhật trong tài khoản, đó là còn chưa kể đến
những mối nguy hại từ những người dùng ảo trên mạng.
Mặt khác, tôi vẫn cho rằng khi cách giao tiếp trực tiếp bị thay thế bởi việc sử dụng các phương
tiện truyền thông, nó sẽ mang lại nhiều lợi ích hơn. Lợi ích lớn nhất đó là xóa đi rào cản về mặt
địa lý, và do đó khiến việc giao tiếp với những người cách xa hàng trăm dặm trở nên dễ dàng hơn.
Ví dụ như, một học sinh đi du học có thể dễ dàng nói chuyện với người thân bằng cách gửi các tin
nhắn, hay một doanh nhân có thể tạo ra các cuộc họp bằng video với đối tác nước ngoài của họ
bất kể khoảng cách xa như thế nào. Hơn nữa, sự thay thế này cũng đẩy nhanh tốc độ của việc
truyền đạt thông tin. Việc giữ liên lạc theo cách giao tiếp truyền thống mất hàng giờ của một
người để đến điểm hẹn và truyền đạt thông tin, nhưng với phương tiện truyền thông mạng xã hội,
chúng ta có thể gửi thông tin này ngay lập tức vào hộp thư của người nhận hay thậm trí khiến nó
được lan rộng nhanh chóng trên mạng.
Nói tóm lại, mặc dù có hại đến việc giao tiếp trực tiếp và nguy hiểm đến người dùng, việc sử dụng
phương tiện truyền thông mạng xã hội để thay thế các cuộc giao tiếp trực tiếp mang lại nhiều lợi
ích hơn.
