Introduction:

Feminism, as a movement, believes in granting the same social political and economic rights to
women as enjoyed by the mails of the society. It is not only the plight of the women in India but
everywhere around the globe that the women suffer domination at the hands of the men. It had
become absolutely necessary for the women 2 realise that they deserved not only and equal
treatment socially but also their views desires capabilities etc need to be accepted. This effort of
the women to voice their independence took the form of a revolution all over the world and got
termed as feminism. Initially the concept was condemned by the society, specifically the mail
members. They thought that the minds of the women were being spoilt with the idea of liberation
And they should stick to the place that had been assigned to them for centuries. The effort of the
women writers has greatly contributed in bringing to light the sorry state of the women and has
helped to shape the feminist struggle in order to empower women and help them surpassed their
deprived status.

Also, there has been a shift in feminist literature with respect to how the women are represented.
Initially, they were always portrayed as victims but with the passage of time they started to resist
this torture and could voice their opinion even in literature. Feminism and Indian literature as well as
feminism in India is not an aloof theory. It has taken shape considering the cultural historical and
social realities, perceptions of each individual woman as well as of the women in masses. Though it
has taken a lot of time, feminism has started to gain acceptance in India and the patriarchal
domination is losing its routes to a certain extent. Of course, it is the effort of the social workers and
volunteers that has led to a change in the condition of women but the role and contribution of the
Indian literature cannot be denied in helping the women gain freedom from the shackles of
patriarchy.

Ironically enough, the introduction of the concept of feminism in India and the claim of women’s
rights were not made by women but men. With the introduction of Western education and culture,
many reform movements, freedom movement, promotion of female education Started to gain
momentum. In post-Independent India, the women had already started getting education. As a
result the new woman also began to MH. Emerge. Education made women believe that they
deserved a lot better treatment and instilled in them a sense of individuality it was at this time that
the feminist trend in Indian literature started to take shape.
