Room Arrangement:

In my future classroom, I want to focus on creating a strong classroom community. My ideal

classroom would have the following: a large open space for class meetings, flexible seating, and
tables (rather than desks) for collaborative work. I want my room to consist of color as well as
visuals displayed around the room. Hopefully, this helps engage students in my classroom.
However, I do not want to many visuals on the wall because that can be overstimulating for
students. Ultimately, I will rearrange my room to fit the needs of all of my students. I realize that I
am going to have to set up my room before the school year starts; however, all I can do is my
best. From the moment my students walk into my classroom, I want them to know that they are
in a safe and welcoming environment.

Student Work:

Managing:

In my future classroom, I will have a classroom list of my students and all of the Kindergarten
standards. I will have a tab with each students number and/or name. As I assess my students
throughout the year, I will check off whether or not they met the standard. If they did not meet
the standard, I will form small groups and work with them when needed. This way I can make
sure that all of my students are staying on track as well as receiving the best education they
possibly can.

Displaying:

I think it is important to display your students’ work throughout the year in your classroom.
Visual displays are important because they communicate powerful messages about community.
The displays give purpose and value to the students’ work. It makes students feel powerful and
that their work/learning matters. This is a wonderful way to establish a strong classroom
community and give students a voice.

Procedures and Routines:

One of the areas I want to focus on starting at the very beginning of the school year is
transitions. Transitions tend to be extremely difficult for students. There are often several points
throughout the day that transitions occur during procedures and/or routines. During my first six
weeks, students had a morning routine that left them with plenty to do until it was time for
morning meeting. For example, when students lined up at the door, they were held to a high
expectation and did not leave the classroom until everyone was in a single file line, with their
hands at their sides, facing forward with their voices off. Or, after the students came in from
lunch/recess, they were expected to use the restroom and get a drink if needed. Then, go into
the classroom and sit down quietly on the carpet for rest and relax. The goal of practicing all
these transitions throughout the day, was for the entire class to get everything done without
needing any reminders from the teacher. When first establishing these routines at the beginning
of the year, my cooperating teacher modeled everything (I Do, We Do, You Do). She also gave
a lot of verbal reminders as to what they needed to be doing. Later on, she slowly started to
redirect her students with non-verbal reminders, which included hand signals and visuals as to
what the students needed to be doing. When the students were doing something they were not
supposed to be doing, she was quick to correct them and tell them what they should be doing
instead. When I have a classroom of my own, I hope to use many of these transition procedures
to establish routines for my students. I really liked how my cooperating teachers always had the
same list of tasks to accomplish for students displayed on the SMART Board from the morning
to the end-of-the-day routine. This way, students only ever needed to look at the board for a
reminder of what they needed to be doing. This was a great way to allow students to become
independent and take responsibility for themselves and their learning.

Rules and Consequences:

Starting from day one, I will be very firm and set clear expectations for my students. If I let me
guard down even a little bit, it is going to be a long year. Especially at the beginning of the year
when the first couple of weeks are primarily routines and expectations. However, my students
will also have the opportunity of setting our class expectations. This is a great way to establish a
community in the classroom. The students will brainstorm and share their voices/ideas with one
another. Over time, I want to establish strong relationships with each one of my students, so
that they respect my classroom, rules, and expectations. I want my students to want to come to
school to learn and to see me. My goal is for every student to enjoy coming to school and for
them to feel like they matter. Logical consequences will be given depending on the
situation/event.
