Ramos | Razo | Recalde
They are distinguished from one another by
their:
✓ Degree of Automation
✓ Capital Expense
✓ Lift-height Capacity
✓ Aisle Width Requirements.
WALKIE STALKERS
Extends the lifting capability of the pallet jack to allow unit
loads to be stacked or placed in storage racks
TYPES:
✓ Straddle type – straddles the load with its outriggers
✓ Reach type – uses a pantograph or scissor devices to
allow the load to be retrieved from and placed in
storage.
WALKIE STALKERS
Appropriate when there is low throughput, short travel
distances, low vertical storage height and low cost solution
is desired.
COUNTERBALANCE LIFT
TRUCKS
The workhorse of material handling; Usually referred to as
fork truck, however not all designs use fork for lifting.
POWER SOURCE:
✓ Battery Operated (BP)
✓ Internal Combustion Engine (which can use gasoline,
propane or diesel fuel)
COUNTERBALANCE LIFT
TRUCKS
Tires used can either be cushion (CT) for indoor operations
or pneumatic (PT) for outdoor operations;
LOAD-CARRYING 1,000 to
CAPABILITY 100,000 lbs.

NARROW-AISLE VEHICLES
Designed to operate in space-efficient storage aisles 5-9
feet wide and 25-60 feet tall
EQUIPMENT TYPES
Straddle Truck
Straddle-Reach Truck
Sideloader Truck
Turret Truck
Hybrid Truck
STRADDLE TRUCK
Often used in warehouses where space is scarce and
excessively expensive. To access loads in storage, the
outriggers are driven into the rack, allowing forks to come
flush with the pallet face
STRADDLE-REACH TRUCK
Developed from the conventional straddle rack by
shortening outriggers on the straddle rack and providing
reach capability.
TYPES OF STRADDLE-
REACH TRUCK
✓ Mast-reach Design – consists of a pantograph or scissors
mounted on a mast.
✓ Double-deep-reach truck – allows the forks to be
extended to a depth that permits loads to be stored to
deep
SIDELOADER TRUCK
Loads and unload from one side, thus, eliminating the
need to turn in the aisle to access storage rooms.
SIDELOADER TRUCK
Two basic designs: either the mast moves on a set of tracks
traversely across the vehicle, or the forks project from a
fixed mast on a pantograph.
SIDELOADER TRUCK
Typical aisle would be 5-7 feet wide, rail or wire guarded
and can access loads up to 30 feet high.
TURRET TRUCK
Does not require the vehicle to make a turn within the aisle
to store or retrieve a pallet. Rather, the load is lifted by
forks that swing on the mast, a mast that swings from the
vehicle or a shuttle fork mechanism
TURRET TRUCK
Typical aisle would be 5-7 feet wide and load position at
heights up to 40 feet, in which both parameters provides
the opportunity to increase storage density where floor
space is limited.
NARROW-AISLE SIDE-
REACH TTRUCKS
Have good maneuverability outside the aisle and some of
the designs with telescoping masts may be driven into a
shipping trailer.
HYBRID TRUCK
Similar to a turret truck, except the operator’s cab is lifted
with the load. Unlike S/R machine, it is not captive to an
aisle but may leave one aisle and enter another.
HYBRID TRUCK
Operate in aisle width ranging from 5-7 feet, allows rack
storage up to 60 feet high in a rack-supported building,
and may include an enclosed operator’s cab, which may
be heated and/or airconditioned.
AUTOMATED STORAGE AND
RETRIEVAL MACHINES
A storage system that uses fixed-path storage and retrieval
(S/R) machines running on one or more rails between fixed
arrays of storage racks.
AUTOMATED STORAGE AND
RETRIEVAL MACHINES
Handles load in excess of 1,000 lbs. and is used for raw
material, work-in-process and finished goods.
SINGLE COMMAND (SC) OPERATION
