What is Umrah?

In Arabic, the word ‘Umrah is derived from I‘timar which

means a visit. However, ‘Umrah in Islamic terminology,
means paying a visit to Ka’bah, performing Tawaf
(circumambulation) around it, walking between Safa and
Marwah seven times. A performer of ‘Umrah puts off his
Ihram by having his hair shaved or cut. ‘Umrah can be
performed along with Hajj and in other days as well.

‘Umrah can be performed during anytime in the year,

there is no fixed time for ‘Umrah.

The Pillars of `Umrah are four:

a) Ihram: which is assumed at the Meeqat.

b) Tawaf: around the House.

c) Sa'y: walking between As-Safa and Al-Marwah, which

consists of seven circuits.

d) Tahal-lul: which means coming out of the state of

Ihram; becoming lawful what was previously prohibited
during Ihram.

During ‘Umrah, pilgrims do not go to Mina, ‘Arafat and

Muzdalifah or throw pebbles on the Jamrahs (stone pillars
representing devils) or offer animal sacrifice. These rites
are only performed during Hajj.

How to perform ‘Umrah:

1. When the one who wants to perform ‘Umrah arrives at

the Meeqat, it is recommended for him (both man and
woman) to take a bath if convenient, including
menstruating women and those experiencing postnatal
bleeding. The man perfumes his head and beard but not
his Ihram garments. There is no harm in what remains of
it after Ihram. There is nothing wrong if it is not possible
to take a bath at Meeqat.

2. Men are to change into their clothing of Ihram while

the women only need to make their intention at that time
in the clothing they are already wearing. There is no
specific clothing designated for women, except that they
are prohibited from wearing the Niqab (face-veil) and
gloves. Instead, they may cover their hands with the
lower part of their khimar (head covering), while using
the upper part of their jilbab (outer garment) or a
separate piece of fabric to cover their faces by drawing it
down, if there is need to do so.
As for men, they must assume their Ihram at the Meeqat
by wearing two pieces of fabric called the Izar and the
Ridaa’. The Ridaa’ covers the top half of the body, while
the Izar covers the lower half. No other clothing is allowed
to be worn in addition to these – no underwear, no pants,
no shirt, no turban, no hat, etc. are to be worn.

Then the pilgrim makes the intention at the Meeqat to

begin the rites of ‘Umrah by entering the state of Ihram.
The intention must be made in the heart, while the
statement made afterwards is: “Labayka ‘Umrah” or
“Allahumma labbayka ‘Umrah”. This statement begins
the rites of `Umrah. So the first pillar of `Umrah is the
Ihram. The intention is made in the heart, while the
tongue recites the opening Talbiyyah. And if you wish,
when uttering Talbiyyah, you may state a condition to
Allah fearing that which may prevent you from
completion of the ‘Umrah whether illness or fear - saying
“in habasanee habes fa mahillee haithu habastanee” (I
come out of the state of Ihram from the place You prevent
me from continuing). So if you do that and are then
prevented or become ill - then you may come out of
Ihram. Then repeat the Talbiyyah: “labbayk Allahumma
labbayk, labbayka la shareeka laka labbayk, innal-hamda
wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, la shareeka lak” (“In response
to your call O Allah I perform ‘Umrah, here I am O Allah.
In response to Your call. You have no partner. In response
to Your call. All Praise and Blessings, and the Ownership
of all that You created is Yours (alone). You have no
partner”)

Upon arriving at the sacred mosque in Makkah (Al-Masjid

Al-Haram), you should enter with your right foot and say:
"Bismillah, Allahumma Salli 'Ala Muhammad, Allahumma
Ighfirli waftahli Abwaba Rahmatik. (In the name of Allah!
O Allah! Exalt the mention of your Messenger. O Allah!
Forgive my sins, and open the gates of Your mercy for
me)." You should enter in a manner expressing humility
and gratitude to the blessings He, Almighty, conferred
upon you.

3. Upon arriving at the Ka’bah, stop reciting the Talbiyyah,

then approach the Black Stone, touch it with your right
hand and kiss it. If this isn't possible, you should face the
Black Stone and point to it. Don’t push and shove,
causing harm and being harmed by other people. When
touching the Stone, the following is said: “Bismil-lah,
Allahu Akbar” (In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest)
or "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the Greatest).

A pilgrim must walk, keeping the Ka’bah on his left. When

you reach the Yamani corner touch it with your right
hand, if possible, but do not kiss it, and say: “Bismil-lahi
wa Allahu Akbar”. If this is difficult for you, then go on
performing tawaf without touching it, pointing at it or
even saying “Allahu Akbar” because this was not
narrated from the Prophet on the other hand whenever
you reach or are parallel to the black stone, touch it with
your right hand, kiss it and say, “Bismillah Allahu Akbar”,
if it is not possible then it is enough to point at it and say,
“Bismillah, Allahu Akbar”.

During this Tawaf it is preferred for a man to do

two things:

a) Al-Idhtibaa' from the beginning of Tawaf until the end,

which is placing the middle of one's Redaa' under the
right arm and the ends of it over the left shoulder. When
you are finished performing Tawaf, you may return your
Reda' to its original state because the time for A-Idhtibaa'
is only during Tawaf.

b) Ar-Raml during the first three circuits only. Ar-Raml

means speeding up one's pace with small steps.

Make supplication from your heart, for that which will

benefit you. Recite whatever you wish, supplicate to Allah
by asking for good, recite the Quran, anything you wish.
There are no specific statements or supplications to be
recited during the Tawaf that are authentically
established in the Sunnah. However it is recommended to
say between the two corners during each circumbulance
as it is reported from the Messenger of Allah : “...Our
Lord, grant us good in this life and good in the
hereafter and save us from the punishment of the
Hellfire.” [Quran: 2:201]

4. When you complete seven circuits of Tawaf, approach

Maqam Ibraheem (Ibraheem’s station) and recite this
verse (which means): “And take you (people) the
Maqam (place) of Ibraheem as a place of Prayer...”
[Quran: 2:125]

Then pray two short Rak’ahs, as close as conveniently

possible, behind Maqam Ibraheem. If it is not possible
then you can pray them anywhere in the sacred mosque.
It is preferred to recite during the first Rak'ah the chapter
"Al-Kafiroon" [109] and during the second one the
chapter of “Al-lkhlas” [112].

Upon completing the two Rak'ahs, return to the Black

Stone and touch it, if convenient

5. The next stage is to go to Safa. Upon approaching the

foot of Safa, the following verse is recited (which means):
“Verily, As-Safa and Al-Marwah are from the
symbols of Allah. So it is not a sin on him who
performs Hajj or 'Umrah of the house (ka 'bah) to
perform the going (tawaf) between them. And
whoever does good voluntarily, then verily, Allah is
the All-Recognizer, All-Knower.” [Quran; 2:158]

6. Then climb unto mount Safa until the Ka'bah is visible,

if possible. Facing the Ka’bah the following is to be said 3
times, and between each time one is to make ones own
supplication:

“Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. La ilaha il-lall-

llahu wadahu la shareeka lahu, lahul mulku wa lahul
hamdu, wa huwa 'ala qulli shay'in qadeer. La ilaha il-lall-
llahu wahdahu, anjaza wa'dahu, wa nasara 'abdahu, wa
hazamal ahzaba wahdahu" (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is
the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. None has the right to
be worshipped except Allah alone, Who has no partner. To
Him belongs the dominion, to Him belongs all praise, and
He has power over everything. He fulfilled His promise,
gave victory to His servant, and defeated the
confederates alone.)

7. Then descend and go towards Marwah, running

between the fluorescent green lights (for men only), upon
reaching Marwah climb upon it if it is possible, and repeat
the same procedure as when ascending Safa except you
are not to recite the above-mentioned verse, because it is
recited when ascending Safa for the first time only. This
completes one circuit. Then one continues back to Safa
running between the fluorescent green lights (for men
only) - thus completing two circuits.
There are no particular supplications to be recited
between Safa and Marwah. Seven circuits are to be
completed ending the last one on Marwah.

Then one is to have his hair cut although shaving it is

better. Women should shorten their hair by a finger-tips
length from the end. The rights of 'Umrah have now been
completed.
Step by Step Guide to Performing an Umrah

Umrah is an Islamic pilgrimage and is, in short, an act of worship of Allah (SWT). It is based on
the teachings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and his Sunnah. The pilgrimage is a visit to the House
of Allah (SWT) and can be carried out any time of the year. It is known as a ‘minor pilgrimage’ in
comparison to the ‘greater pilgrimage’ of Hajj. However, it holds great value and virtue in the
eyes of Allah (SWT).
The Umrah comprises of four basic pillars:

1) Ihram
Ihram is essentially making the formal ‘intention’ of performing the Umrah. In order to enter the
fold of Ihram, the individual must change clothes and take a proper bath (ghusl) which
showcases an act of washing away all impurities. Men change into the two fabrics, Ridaa and
Izaar, whereas women can wear any form of clothing which covers the body and head. Women
who are menstruating or experiencing postnatal bleeding are also advised to perform ghusl.
Upon the cleansing, the individual should perform the obligatory prayers or offer two rakaat of
Sunnah prayer. Once that is done, the individual should face the direction of the Qibla and
officially enter Ihram – the individual must enter Ihram before he/she leaves for the Meeqat in
Makkah. Perfume or perfumed products are strictly prohibited while a person is in his/her
Ihram.
At the Meeqat, the pilgrim must make the intention and recite the words:
“Labbayk Allaahumma bi ‘Umrah”
(Here I am, O Allah, for ‘Umrah)
After this, he/she should recite the Talbiyah, in line with the Sunnah:
“Labbayka Allaahumma labbayk, labbayka laa shareeka laka labbayk. Inna al-hamd wa’l-
ni’mata laka wa’l-mulk, laa shareeka lak”
(Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily all praise and
blessings are Yours, and all sovereignty, You have no partner).”
It is advised that the individual keep reciting the Talbiyah from the moment he/she enters Ihram
until he/she gets to the performance of the Tawaaf.

2) Tawaaf (around the House of Allah (SWT))

The pilgrim must then enter Masjid al-Haram, and that too with his/her right foot and recite:
“Bismillaah wa’l-salaatu wa’l-salaam ‘ala Rasool-Allaah. Allaahumma ighfir li dhunoobi
waftah li abwaab rahmatika. A’oodhu Billaah il-‘Azeem wa bi wajhih il-kareem wa bi
sultaanih il-‘qadeem min al-Shaytaan il-rajeem”
(In the name of Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah,
forgive me my sins and open to me the gates of Your mercy. I seek refuge with Allah the
Almighty and in His noble Countenance and His eternal power from the accursed Satan).”
The pilgrim can then touch the Black Stone (Hajr e Aswad) and start the Tawaaf. Ideally, the
pilgrim should touch it with his right hand and then kiss it. If, however, he/she is unable to kiss it
directly, he/she can touch it with his/her hand then kiss his/her hand. There is great virtue in
touching the Black Stone. If he/she cannot even touch the stone with his/her hand, the pilgrim
should face his/her hand in the direction of the stone and say “Allahu Akbar”. Then the pilgrim
starts the Tawaaf – taking rounds around the Ka’bah, with the Ka’bah being on their left. One
must be careful not to touch the cloth of the Ka’bah during Tawaaf as it is perfumed and
touching it might rub off some of the perfume onto you making the state of Ihram void.
Men must keep the right shoulder uncovered during the Tawaaf, which is known as Idtibaa. This
is done by placing the Ridaa beneath the right armpit and taking it up on the left shoulder.
Moreover, the men must practice ‘raml’ in the first three rounds of Tawaaf, which is essentially
walking fast while taking small steps. For the rest of the rounds, they can walk on their normal
place.
Upon finishing the seven rounds of Tawaaf, the pilgrim must then go to the station of Ibrahim
(Maqaam e Ibrahim) and recite the following words:
“And take you (people) the Maqaam (place) of Ibraaheem (Abraham) [or the stone on which
Ibraaheem (Abraham) stood while he was building the Ka’bah] as a place of prayer (for some
of your prayers, e.g. two Rak‘at after the Tawaaf of the Ka’bah at Makkah)” (Surah
Baqarah:125)
The pilgrim should then offer two rakaat of prayer behind Maqaam e Ibrahim. If that is proving
difficult, the pilgrim can offer the prayers in any spot of the mosque. During the first
rakah, Surah Al-Kafirun (109) is recited and for the second rakah, Surah Al-Ikhlaas (112) is
recited. Upon offering the prayer, the individual should head back to the Black Stone and touch
it if possible.

3) Saa’i between Safa and Marwah

The pilgrim should then head for the place of Saa’i (Masaa) and when he/she nears the hill of
Safa, the following should be recited:
“Verily, As-Safa and Al-Marwah (two mountains in Mecca) are of the Symbols of Allah” (Surah
Baqarah:158)
And
“Nabda’u bima bada’a Allaah bihi”
(We start with that with which Allah started)
The pilgrim must then climb up on the Safa hill to a point from where the Ka’bah is visible.
He/she should face the Ka’bah, raise his/her hand and supplicate to Allah (SWT). The pilgrim is
free to make whatever dua he/she desires. According to a hadith, the Holy Prophet (PBUH)
recited the following dua as praise:
“Laa ilaaha ill-Allah wahdahu laa shareeka lah, lahu’l-mulk, wa lahu’l-hamd, wa huwa ‘ala
kulli shay’in qadeer. Laa ilaaha ill-Allah wahdah, anjaza wa’dah, wa nasara ‘abdah, wa
hazamaa al-ahzaaba wahdah”
(There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner or associate; His is the Dominion, all praise
is due to Him, and He is able to do all things. There is no god but Allah alone; he fulfilled His
promise, granted victory to His slave, and defeated the confederates alone).” (Sahih Muslim,
1218)
The pilgrim should repeat this 3 times; do dhikr, supplicate, do dhikr, supplicate (and so on).
Then the pilgrim should descend down to Marwah and the men are to run between the green
lights. The distance is marked by two green markers – the men should run till the second marker
and then walk up normally to the hill of Marwah and climb up. There, the pilgrim must face the
Qibla and recite what he/she said at Safa. After that, the pilgrim must descend again and head
towards Safa. Upon reaching Safa, the pilgrim must repeat what he/she did the first time and
repeat the same when he/she goes back to Marwah for seven circuits (One circuit is from Safa
to Marwah).

4) Shaving the head/Cutting of Hair

Lastly, upon the completion of the seven circuits, the pilgrim is required to cut his/her hair. The
men are required to shave their heads or cut their hair on their entire head equally. The women
are required to cut their hair equal to the length of a fingertip.
With this last act, the pilgrim officially completes his/her Umrah.
Hopefully, this article will prove to be useful to those planning on performing the Umrah soon.
May Allah (SWT) accept your duas and good deeds. Ameen!
There are 4 primary steps of Umrah:
1. Ihram: Enter into Ihram by washing your body and wearing Ihram and
declare the intention to make the pilgrimage.
2. Tawaf: Enter Al Masjid Al Haram (Holy Mosque) and perform Tawaf –
circling the Kaaba seven times in a counterclockwise direction.
3. Sa’i: Perform Sa’i – walking 7 times between the hills of Safa and
Marwah beside the Kaaba.
4. Taqseer: At the end of the Umrah, men exit from Ihram by shaving their
head. Completing Umrah for women requires cutting off a short lock of hair.
Umrah is an Arabic word that means “to visit populated places”. Unlike Hajj it is not
obligatory and is performed voluntarily by Muslims to show their devotion towards Almighty
Allah. The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed (between it and the previous one). And
the reward of Hajj Mabrur (the one accepted by Allah) is nothing except Paradise.”
Umrah requires some homework. You should know about the rituals and how to perform
them. But it all comes later. First, you have to choose a travel agency that helps you get
everything done for your Holy land travel. There are a variety of Umrah packages, choose
according to your need. When its all done, now you can focus on what we are talking about
in this article; how you can perform Umrah nice and easily!
How to Perform Umrah Step by Step
Let me break the Umrah performing in steps for you, to make it easier for you to
understand. Let’s get started.

Step 1: IHRAM
When you have left for Saudi Arabia. Make sure you are in the Ihram clothing.

After leaving home start reciting below mention Dua’a and Talbiya continuously. It is
compulsory to recite Talbiya loudly once.

DUA

(In the name of ALLAH, I place my trust in ALLAH, and there is no might nor power except
with ALLAH)

TALBIYAH

(At Your service, Allah, at Your service. At Your service, You have no partner, at Your
service. Truly all praise, favour and sovereignty is Yours. You have no partner.)

Now, You should perform the following actions to ensure you are prepared to enter into the
state of Ihram:
For Men, it is sandals and two sheets of white colour.
For Women, it is their usual clothing and footwear, over which they wear the Hijab or Jilbab.
 Trim your nails.
 Shave the underarms and pubic hair.
 Men should trim their moustache if they have one.
 Take a bath.
 Perfume can be applied to the body but not to the Ihram sheet.
 Take a bath (Ghusal) with the intention of Ihram.
 Wear Ihram sheets.
 Offer two Rakat of Nafal by covering your head.
Remember, you have not entered the state of Ihram yet. You will not until you have uttered
the intention for Ihram, and that is done once you have passed the Miqat. A pilgrim sets
Niyyah (intention) of Umrah and recites Talbiyah before Miqat.
 With your head uncover declare your intention / Niyyah :

“Here I am O Allah, making Umrah”

“O ALLAH! I intend to perform Umrah, please make it easy for me and accept it from me”

 When Enter Masjid Al Haram: Recite Darud e Sharif and Supplicate to

ALLAH and proceed towards Kabah.
(In the name of ALLAH! O ALLAH! Exalt the mention of your Messenger. O ALLAH! Forgive
my sins, and open the gates of Your mercy for me).

 Keep your eyes fixed at Baitullah and Say:

‫ و ل لل الحمةد‬,‫اق اكبر‬
‫اق أكبر ل‬
‫ ل‬,‫ا‬
‫ ل إلةةه ال ل‬,‫اق أكبر‬
‫اق أكبر ل‬
‫ل‬

(ALLAH is the Greatest, ALLAH is the Greatest, there is no God, but ALLAH, ALLAH is the
Greatest, ALLAH is the Greatest, to Him belongs all Praise.)

 After this recite Talbiya and move forward to perform Tawaf.

Prohibitions of Ihram
1. Cutting Nails
2. Haircutting Or removing extra hair from any part of the body.

the Yamani corner to the Black Stone, recite :
‫سةنة ةوقلةناِ ةعةذاةب اللناِر‬ ‫سةنة ةولفي ال ل‬
‫خةرلة ةح ة‬ ‫ةرلبةناِ آلتةناِ لفي الددونةياِ ةح ة‬
(Our Lord, grant us good in this life and good in the hereafter and save us from the
punishment of the Hellfire.[Quran; 2:201])
When they will reach Rukh Al Yamani (the fourth corner of Kabah) they should only touch

O Allah! I implore for the beneficial knowledge, vast provisions and cure from every
disease.”

3. SA’I
The meaning of Sa’ey is to run/ walk back and forth seven times between the hills of Safah
& Marwa which are situated to the North and South of Kabah.
As you leave the boundary of the Masjid, you can say (as prescribed for all Masaajid):
‫لبوسلم ل ل‬,
‫ الللقهلم إلنني أةوسأ ةلقةك لمون ةف و‬,‫ ةو الصلة والسلم ةعةلىَ رسول ا‬,‫ا‬
‫ضللةك‬
(In the name of Allah, and prayers and peace be upon the Messenger of Allaah. O Allaah, I
ask You from Your favour. O Allaah, guard against the accursed devil.)
Upon approaching Mount Safaa, the following Ayaat (verse) is recited
‫ة‬
(Verily, As‐Safaa and Al‐Marwah are from the symbols of Allaah. So it is not a sin on him
who performs Hajj or ‘Umrah of the house (ka ‘bah) to perform the going (tawaaf) between
them. And whoever does good voluntarily, then verily, Allaah is the All‐Recognizer, All‐
Knower. [Quran; 2:158])

(I begin with what Allaah began with.)

Then ascend upon Mount Safaa, face the Qiblah, raise your hands and recite 3 times:
‫ ل‬,‫اق أكبر‬
‫اق أكبر‬ ‫ ل‬,‫اق أكبر‬
‫ل‬

(Allaah is the Greatest, Allaah is the Greatest, Allaah is the Greatest.)

(There is nothing worthy of worship except Allah, Alone. He has no partner, To Him belongs
the kingdom, & all praise belongs to Him, & He has power above all things, There is nothing
worthy of worship except Allah, He fulfilled His promise, Granted victory to His servant, And
alone He defeated the allied army.)
The seventh trip will end at Marwa. After this, the pilgrim will offer two (2) Rakat nafal.

4. Taqseer (Taqsir, Qasar, Halaq)

After Sa’yee male pilgrims will get their heads completely shaved, females will clip their hair
equal to a length of a fingertip.

Now all Ihraam rules are lifted, and your Umrah is completed. May Allah accept your
Umrah, Ameen!!
