INTroduction
Development of a country depends on the connectivity of various places with adequate road network
Roads constitute the most important mode of communication in areas where railways have not yet developed much
Roads make a crucial contribution to economic development and growth and bring important social benefits. They
are of vital importance in order to make nation grow and develop.
Roads Open Up more areas and stimulate economic and social development.
COMposition of asphalt
Asphalts are highly complex and not well-characterized materials containing saturated and unsaturated aliphatic
and aromatic compounds with up to 150 carbon atoms. Their composition varies depending on the source of crude
oil. Many of the compounds contain oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, and other heteroatoms. Asphalt typically contains
about 80% by weight of carbon; around 10% hydrogen; up to 6% sulfur; small amounts of oxygen and nitrogen; and
trace amounts of metals such as iron, nickel, and vanadium. The molecular weights of the constituent compounds
range from several hundred to many thousands.
BITUMEN
John McAdam
John Loudon McAdam was born in Ayr, Scotland, in 1756. In 1787, he became a trustee of the Ayrshire Turnpike in
the Scottish Lowlands and during the next seven years this hobby became an obsession. He moved to Bristol,
England, in 1802 and became a Commissioner for Paving in 1806.[7] On 15 January 1816, he was elected Surveyor-General of
roads for the Turnpike Trust and was now responsible for 149 miles of road.[7] He then put his ideas about road construction into
practice, the first 'macadamised' stretch of road being Marsh Road at Ashton Gate, Bristol.[7] He also began to actively propagate his ideas in two booklets called
Remarks
(or Observations) on the Present System of Roadmaking, (which ran nine editions between 1816 and 1827) and A
Practical Essay on the Scientific Repair and Preservation of Public Roads, published in 1819.[8]
John McAdam
McAdam's method was simpler, yet more effective at protecting roadways: he discovered that massive foundations
of rock upon rock were unnecessary, and asserted that native soil alone would support the road and traffic upon it,
as long as it was covered by a road crust that would protect the soil underneath from water and wear.
