Research Topic
Comparison On The Effectiveness Between Normal Insecticide And
Lemongrass Extract For Repelling Mosquitoes.

About Researcher

1.1 Introducing My Research.

Insects has been considered pests in most households and humans have created
insecticides to combat with the so-called pests. This research will unclosure the real
dangerous effect of insecticides and to reveal the efficiency of lemongrass extract as a
substitute compared to normal insecticides. Insecticides which is supposed to kill insects have
killed many people especially adolescence around the world each year.

Insecticides are believed to cause serious health problems and is linked to many
genetic diseases suffered by mostly adolescence each year. There’s a lot of cases that caused
from chemical insecticides in past. We know that chemical insecticide has a little atractive
smell for certain person, this is because it is one of the types of inhalan.

In this research, I would like to compare two types of insecticides which are chemical
insecticide and natural insect repellent.Through this research, I can check the effectiveness of
both types by observe the condition of insects after have been sprayed with following the
methods. The things that me want to point out are effects of insecticide to environmental
including human health, both positive and negative effects.

An article from Toxics Action Center states that “At least 382 of the chemicals that
the U.S. EPA lists as inert ingredients were once or are currently also registered as pesticide
active ingredients. This means that the public is kept in the dark about the contents of
pesticide products that may be hazardous. Among the ingredients that are listed as both inert
and active ingredients are chloropicrin, which has been linked to asthma and pulmonary
edema, and chlorothanonil, a probable human carcinogen.”

The objectives of my project are to determine the efficiency of Lemongrass Oil in

getting rid of insects. So, the differences of normal and natural insecticides can be compared.
Lastly, I want to help our Earth by determining a better option in getting rid of insect. Not
just to help my species which is human but for the whole world such as beautiful flora and
fauna.

Even in small doses insecticides has been believed to intefere with hormones
especially reproduction-related hormones. Some of the defects insecticides caused are
reduced semen quality, genital malformations, early puberty, pregnancy complications and
cancers such as testicular, prostate and breast cancer. This research is supposed to raise
awareness against the dangers of insecticide and finding reasons why insecticides should be
managed more carefully than other substances.

In recent years, botanical insect repellents have become increasingly popular as viable
alternatives to synthetic chemical pest repellents because they reputedly pose little risk to the
environment or human health. A natural insect repellent like Citronella, which is from a
lemongrass extract is commonly used as a substitute to the normal insecticide. Citronella is
popularly used to repel insects like mosquitoes.
1.2 Problem Statement

In 2018 alone, 200 million tonnes of insecticides has been used. This has caused many health
and environmental issues. Some researchers has relied more on natural insecticides as it is
believed to cause less issues. Unfortunately, it is harder to use and cost a lot more money than
chemical insecticides. The efficiency of natural insecticides is still unknown as there is little
research conducted to detemine their efficiency.

A 2007 systematic review found that "most studies on non-Hodgkin,

lymphoma and leukemia showed positive associations with insecticide exposure" and thus
concluded that cosmetic use of pesticides should be decreased. Today cosmetics also contain
the materials come from insecticide. So, we should be more aware of this case because the
effects are very dangerous according past records.

Insecticides can also be classified as pesticides to prevent insects or pests. The impact of
pesticides consists of the effects of pesticides on non-target species. Pesticides are chemical
preparations used to kill fungal or animal pests. Over 98% of sprayed insecticides and 95%
of herbicides reach a destination other than their target species, because they are sprayed or
spread across entire agricultural fields. Runoff can carry pesticides into aquatic environments
while wind can carry them to other fields, grazing areas, human settlements and undeveloped
areas, potentially affecting other species.

Lastly, be aware about your eating because pesticides can be anywhere nowdays. Not
only are pesticides dangerous to the environment, but they are also hazardous to a person's
health. Pesticides are stored in your colon, where they slowly but surely poison the body. You
may not realize this, but when you are eating a non-organic apple, you are also eating over 30
different pesticides that have been sprayed on the apple.
