INTRODUCTION
Engineering colleges in India are producing thousands of engineers every year. For
these thousands of aspiring engineers, there are hundreds of engineering colleges
that boast of providing quality education to these budding minds. However, a larger
chunk of these aspiring minds doesn’t want to get into any such engineering college
that boasts of its quality education. Therefore, they vie with each other through vari-
ous national level entrance exams, which are the ticket of entry to reputed engineering
colleges. Among some of the most sought-after national level engineering exams, JEE
Main/JEE Advanced stand at the helm. Every year, 12-13 lakh students appear for JEE
Main. While appearing for the coveted engineering examination and afterwards, their
minds are occupied with various queries. One of these could be their aspiring minds
wanting to know what chance do they stand to grab a seat at the premiere institutes -
National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology
(IIITs) and other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). When such a huge
number of aspirants appear in JEE Main, it becomes imperative for them to know the
seat matrix at these institutes of national importance.

Seat Matrix at Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs):

With a total 13,583 seats across 23 IITs, every candidate dreams about getting into one of the
23 IITs. However, candidates can only be admitted to 13,583 seats available across all the IITs.
IIT Kharagpur admits maximum number of students - 1585, while IIT BHU offers admission at
1346 seats and IIT Roorkee at 1136 seats. Seat Matrix for the 23 IITs can be understood from

With a total of 21,133 seats across the 31 National Institutes of Technology, NIT Rourkela has
1202 seats, NIT Jalandhar offers admission at 1133 seats, and the total number of seats at NIT

IIITs are also the institutes of national importance. Out of a total 4713 seats available across
all the 25 IIITs, “Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad offers admissions at
maximum number of seats, ie: 388, followed by Pt. Dwarka Prasad Mishra IIIT, Design & Manu-
facture, Jabalpur and IIIT Design & Manufacturing, Kancheepuram which offer 377 and 350

Out of a total 5806 seats across all 28 Government-funded Technical Institutes, “Birla Institute
of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi and Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology,
Shibpur both offer 1530 undergraduate engineering seats to aspiring candidates, while “Punjab
Engineering College, Chandigarh has a seat capacity of 608 and Institute of Technology, Guru
Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya, Bilaspur offers 500 UG engineering seats. Seat capacity at rest of
