Library Use Practices of the Senior High students of Basilan National High School

Background of the Study

A library is a collection of sources of information and similar resources, elected

by experts and made accessible to a defined community for reference or borrowing.

Library can be freely used for your own personal, professional and organizational

development. Here in Basilan National High School we have our own library, it is

organized for use and maintained by a librarian. A library's collection can include books,

periodicals, newspapers, manuscripts, films, maps, prints, documents, microform, CDs,

cassettes, videotapes, DVDs, Blu-ray Discs, e-books, audiobooks, databases, and other

formats and can range widely in size up to millions of items.

As gateways to knowledge and culture, libraries play a fundamental role in

society. They also help ensure an authentic record of knowledge created and

accumulated by past generations. In a world without libraries, it would be difficult to

advance research and human knowledge or preserve the world’s cumulative knowledge

and heritage for future generations (Ben White 2012). The future of libraries may

someday depend upon their adolescent users, librarians need to look for methods to

attract and provide needed information for all patrons, including research materials,

electronic media, multimedia resources, special programs, and books and magazines

for pleasure reading.

Traditionally, the public library has been viewed and supported as both a service

organization and designed to provide library users with access to a wide variety of

recreational and educational information (Berelson, 1949; Curley, 1990; Kachel, 1997).

People use the Library, primarily for three purposes: To get to know it as a general

purpose resource they can use over time, to find a type of resource to solve a current
problem, achieve a goal or meet an interest and to learn how various topics can

conventionally be categorized and integrated with each other. Similarly, the purpose of

the school library has been to provide students and teachers with access to resources

and instructional materials that support the school’s curriculum. This is especially

important in regard to adolescent users who find their information needs and retrieval

methods changing according to school assignments or the availability of resources

located in their school, public, and home libraries.

Library plays a very important role in promoting the progress of knowledge.

There are many people who love reading but some can’t afford to buy books because

the prices of books are very high, so when one becomes a member of a library, he/she

can borrow valuable books, he/she can borrow two books at a time and can keep it with

for two weeks. Libraries are particularly useful for poor children, even those who are

better off can’t afford to buy all the books they require for their studies. In order to

ensure that libraries are prepared to meet the needs of their young adult patrons,

research needs to be conducted that will provide information about how and why they

use the library, so I, the researcher decided to conduct a study to assess the library use

practices of the students of Basilan National High School.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to know and asses the library use practices of the selected senior

high students of Basilan National High School.

Specifically, this study sought answers to the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:

a. Age

b. Gender

c. Grade & Strand

2. What are the demographic profiles of the respondents in terms of:

a. Often a student use library in a year

b. Frequency of using library

c. Average time using library

3. How does the library is useful to students in terms of:

a. Research

b. School projects

c. Reading
Significance of the Study

This study gathers all data information for the benefit of the students, teachers,

readers and future researchers.

Students. This study contains information that would give them knowledge,

understanding as well as insights on the library use practices.

Teachers. This study will be beneficial to the teachers, it can be used for future

use especially in support to their students. And to make them understand about the library

use practice happening in the school.

Future Researchers. The outcome of the study is beneficial to the neither present

researchers or the future researchers.

Scope and Delimitation

This study is a quantitative type of research. The key point of the study conducted

is to assess and determine as well as to fully understand the different library use practices

of the senior high students of Basilan National High School.

The study is a Survey type of research wherein I, the researcher intends to provide

a quantitative or numeric descriptions of trends, attitudes and opinions of a population on

this matter.

The study will be conducted at Basilan National High School, Isabela City,

Province of Basilan. The respondents of this study were limited to the selected senior

high students for the year 2019-2020.
