1. Company Background (1-2 slides, 1 st slide must )

In the introduction, this are suggested info or words to be mentioned (or orally to be explained)

-Greet the panelist/s, Introduce yourself and your company -Discuss why you choose the company (your first few words create big impact). -Say something interesting about the company. Example is that you are interested to the

manufacturing process of orange juice, then you choose Zesto. Or you are a car enthusiast then choose Toyota, or you choose a small company because your brother is the manager of that company. Or you are a legal management student, of course on top of my mind I want a law firm. -As an accountancy student, you can mention that the company is affected by TRAIN LAW -You may mention something political or legally related about the company or personal (emotional) connection to the company. Example. The company has many lawsuits that won or You are a scholar of the company.

-Or you are impressed to the ideology or philosophy of the Owner or CEO of the company. Or mention a rhetorical question to the company a need for strategy. Or mention short story of the company with humble beginning. Or you can start the presentation by a quotation or motivational statement from a known person. Or mention that the owner of the company is a graduate of legal management or a lawyer or graduate of San Beda University. Or you want to help your family business, so you want help or advice from the panelist.

The student must first mention that they conducted an external analysis following the PESTEL Discuss the summary of the your external analysis by Verbally mention the top 2 Opportunities that is contributing to the high EFE score. Basis of highlighting is the high weighted score. If the panel wants explanation or details of all Opportunities, it is written in the complete strama paper. Be emotional or show emphasis through high volume of voice in explaining the most important Opportunities. Verbally mention the top 2 Threats that is contributing to the EFE score. (Same with Opportunity approach). Basis of highlighting is the high weighted score.

To show competency and to impress the panel (sa tagalog pa-bibo), student must mention a personal interesting discovery in those highlighted opps and threats. Or you can mention to the panels that your company interviewee is emphasizing a certain opportunity that you agree or disagree.

To make the reporting lively and interesting, the STRAMA student must also insert interesting discovery in doing the external analysis. Student may also mention application of other subjects, or recommendation of the strama adviser, or the strama teacher, or a professor who thought you on a particular external analysis. STRAMA student may mention one or several opportunities or threat that has legal implication or connected to political factor. Student must mention latest external

news like Pres Du30 Admin, ending contractualization, inflation, ASEAN integration, Millenials and Gen Z, Info Tech, global warming, and automation. This are proof that you really did your own strama paper.

This slide is so important because it demonstrate your preparedness. Don’t read the slide. Practice your presentation at home. This will help increase your comfort level with the powerpoint slides and your notes, the timing of each piece of your presentation and allow you to remain within the recommended time for the presentation.

More Tips on Nervous Management during EFE questioning

-Just focus on the definition of opportunity and threat. A technique is inhaling and exhaling because intake of oxygen normalizes heartbeat. -If really needed, Student can mention to the panelists that he or she is nervous and that you need a pause.

For I.E. discuss if the company fall in Grow and Build, Hold and Maintain, Harvest or Divest For G.S. discuss if the company fall in what quadrant (verbally explain that this is due to the weak or strong competitive position and slow or rapid market growth.

7. QSPM (1 slide). Show the ranking of the strategies based on the weighted score.

The student must mention that frequency of appearance of the strategies was evaluated and top 3 strategies were identified. Discuss the score and ranking on what strategy is ranked number 1, 2 and 3. (STRAMA students are free to comment if they agree to the ranking or in the mathematics that’s done in the strama paper. The student may discuss that they consulted the owner or the president or a manager of the company if the prioritized strategy is really needed or relevant.)

8. Strategic Issues (1-2 slides)

-The student must mention that this is the biggest problem of the company or biggest opportunity that the company is missing. Don’t tell “Walang Website ang company” or “or Marami nagreresign sa company”. Answer must be strategic (or long term), not procedural issues of the company. You may call the 3 alternatives strategies as umbrella strategy. Discuss main aspects or concepts on how to implement strategy 1, 2 and 3 Remember to emphasize Strategy #1, wherein it solves or aligns itself in the strategic issues. The student must demonstrate his or her learning in their 4 years of stay in San Beda by discussing the recommendations aligned to the Strategy #1, Strategy#2, and Strategy #3. If the panelist has no more or less question, the student may request help by asking the panelist on what else need to be included in the strama paper or to help the company. Be polite if the panelist has so many objections.

Guidelines for Strategic Management Paper Oral Defense

1. Student presentation of the key findings (25 minutes) This will include the following:

a. Company background

b. Porter’s 5 forces and conclusion as to the attractiveness of the industry

c. Competitive profile matrix and the relative position of the firm vis-à-vis rival

companies

d.

External Factor Evaluation Matrix, highlight 1-2 major opportunities and threats. Discuss briefly the EFE score, i.e., the general response of the firm to the external environment

e. Internal Factor Evaluation Matrix, highlight 1-2 major strengths and weaknesses. Discuss briefly the IFE score, i.e., the general response of the firm to its internal environment.

f. Matching tools used including the suggested strategies per tool.

g. Summary of strategic issues, drawn from an analysis of the opportunities, threats, strengths and weaknesses.

h. Objectives: Financial and Strategic

i. Recommended Vision-Mission Statements

j. Recommended Strategies

k. 1-2 major activities that will operationalize the strategies recommended

l. Highlights of the financial projections

2. Q&A (30 minutes)

The panel members will ask questions pertaining to all aspects of the STRAMA paper to validate the student’s mastery of the firm used as subject of the paper. The panel should assess also the learner’s understanding and correct application of the concepts and tools in Strategic Management. See criteria for the oral defense (defined in the syllabus and in the grading sheet to be distributed to the panelist).

3. Panel deliberation (5 minutes)

The student will be asked to step out of the room after the presentation while the members of the panel discuss their final evaluation and grading of the oral defense.
