Scenario 1: You discover that your immediate supervisor is taking bribes.

You are uncertain

whether to report it. The conflict is between your loyalty to your boss and your commitment to
the greater good of the company.
● This is a situation where you must report the bribery that is going on within the company.
Using money to get ahead/get to the top is ethically wrong and should not be taken
lightly. To some it may seem scary to report a colleague within the company, especially
someone who has direct oversight over your job; however, if you report your boss on an
issue such as bribery your boss will have no leverage over the situation and there will be
no repercussions for you. If possible, you could also report this issue anonymously.

Scenario 2: You work for a nonprofit organization that helps AIDS victims. You discover a
government error that results in significantly higher funding for your organization. Do you keep
the money, which you know will go to a good cause, or do you report the error?
● You must report the error. Sure the government money is going to a good cause,
however, it is unethical to use money that is not meant to be used. AIDS research and
helping people who have AIDS is extremely important and the government might be
more willing to allocate more money to AIDS if they were to ask for it. Instead of
stealing the government money, report it.

Scenario 3: You are one of two personal trainers who work in a small town. You are presently
certified and your competition is not. Your competition misrepresents himself/herself and claims
to be certified. He/She has a very large client base and your business is struggling. What do you
do?
● This situation is something that must be reported in order to avoid injury or any
misleading advice. Since this person is not certified, they could give incorrect advice and
may design a workout plan that is not safe for some clients. They may not know how to
work with those who have health issues, disabilities, or injuries, and this could cause
multiple issues. For the safety of the clients, this situation should be reported
immediately.

Scenario 4: You work in a fitness facility with three employees. Your supervisor has been
stealing small amounts of used equipment over the past two years. Each year when the inventory
is taken, the losses are hidden in the report. Equipment is your responsibility. The company
owner notices the discrepancies in the inventory. What do you do?
● This situation should be reported as soon as possible. Many clients pay to have access to
gym equipment, and they should have the opportunity to use it. Since there are three
employers, it would be best to report the situation as soon as possible to avoid the
possibility of the company owner blaming your innocent coworkers. Since equipment is
your responsibility, inventory and the condition of equipment should be closely
monitored and you should provide a detailed and accurate report in order to do your job
to the best of your ability.

Scenario 5: Every morning for the past 6 months the same client comes to your office to
complain. You are the Fitness Center Director. Each day the complaint is something different.
The client is a very powerful member of the community. How do you handle the situation?
How do you limit the complaints?
● In this situation, it is important to make sure the client is taken care of without
talking down on the company. If there is a different complaint every day it is
likely that the client is just a pessimistic person. A good way to handle the
situation is to explain why things are the way they are to possibly convince the
client that things aren’t as negative as they think. A good way to limit the
complaints is to remain positive with the client and not fall into their negativity.
Also, if some of the complaints are small and actually make sense, then it would
be smart to resolve them for the better of the clients.
