CE 2310 Mechanics of Materials

Assignment – 9 Due: 13th Nov 2019

All problems will be graded and are required to be submitted:

1. A ductile hot-rolled steel bar has a minimum yield strength in tension and compression of 350
MPa. Using the distortion-energy and maximum-shear-stress theories determine the factors of
safety(N) for the following plane stress states:
(a) σx = 100 MPa, σy = 100 MPa
(b) σx = 100 MPa, σy = 20 MPa, τxy = −20 MPa

Draw the failure envelope curves and mark the stress state.
Distortion energy theory (((σ1- σ2)2+(σ2- σ3)2+(σ3- σ1)2)/2)0.5= σy/N
Maximum shear stress theory τmax = σy/(2N)

2.For the cantilever beam shown in the figure:

a) Compute factors of safety, based upon the distortion energy theory, for stress elements at A
and B of the member shown in the figure. This bar is made of AISI 1006 cold-drawn steel(yield
strength in tension and compression of 280 MPa) and is loaded by the forces F = 0.55 kN, P = 4.0
kN, and T = 25 N · m.
(b) Describe the location of the critical point. Is it A, or B, or some "other" point?
(c) Let P=0 and T=0, and determine the length that will give the same factor of safety at A and B
(same as one another, not same as part (a)).

3. A horizontal beam AB is pin-supported at end A and carries a load Q at end B, as shown in the
figure. The beam is supported at C by a pinned-end column. The column is a solid steel bar (E is
200 GPa) of square cross section having length as 1.8 m and side dimensions b as 60 mm.
Based upon the critical load of the column, determine the allowable load Q if the factor of safety
with respect to buckling is N=2.0.(Pallow=Pcr/N)

4. A steel bar having a square cross section (50 mm X 50 mm) and length L =2.0 m is compressed
by axial loads that have a resultant P =60 kN acting at the midpoint of one side of the cross
section. Assuming that the modulus of elasticity E is equal to 210 GPa and that the ends of the
bar are pinned, calculate the maximum deflection and the maximum bending moment.

5. A pinned-end column of length L = 2.1 m is constructed of steel pipe (E = 210 GPa) having inside
diameter d1=60 mm and outside diameter d2=68 mm. A compressive load P =10 kN acts with
eccentricity e= 30 mm.
(a) What is the maximum compressive stress in the column?
(b) If the allowable stress in the steel is 50 MPa, what is the maximum permissible length of the
column?

6 a. The two link members are made of hot-rolled steel. Both members are 80mm wide (in the
xy-plane) and 15mm thick (in the z-direction). Determine the factor of safety for buckling of the
member AB. For in-plane buckling, the ends are obviously pinned-pinned. For out-of-plane
buckling, consider the ends to be fixed-fixed (σy =290 MPa, E=207GPa).
b. As a designer, you may have the option of either reconfiguring the structure or reversing the
direction of the load to change the loading in the two links. If you reverse the direction of the
load, do you expect the factor of safety for buckling to be higher or lower than for the original
configuration? Explain briefly.
