4 1 Introduction

1.1 General
The MAGNETOM ESSENZA utilizes a newly designed water-cooling system. The cooling
requirements of the MAGNETOM ESSENZA are somewhat lower than of other 1.5 T sys‐
tems. This is mainly due to the reduced gradient performance. Please be aware that the
system needs water cooling even when in the “System off” status. The reason is the heli‐
um compressor (MREF) for the cold-head cooling the magnet.
Fig. 1: Cooling requirement

There are two versions of the Integrated Cooling System (ICS) available for the MAGNE‐
TOM ESSENZA:
n ICS passive (standard) - this version requires primary cooling water provided by the
customer via an existing in-house cooling system or a purchased chiller.
n ICS active (optional) - with this option the customer is independent of any external
water cooling supply.

1.2 Secondary Water Circuit

The secondary water circuit of both the passive and active version of the ICS is almost
identical.

1.2.1 Supplied Components

The ICS supplies the following components with cooling water (the so-called secondary
water circuit):
n in the ICS itself

Air Conditioning System (ACS) 8 to 12 l/min 2 kW

Helium Compressor (MREF = Magnet REFrigerator) 8 to 12 l/min 6 kW

n in the ECA

RF-Power Amplifier (RFPA) 8 to 12 l/min 0.7 kW

Gradient Power Amplifier (GPA) 15 to 25 l/min 5 kW

n in the magnet room

Gradient Coil (GC) and RF-InfraStructure (RFIS_60) 14 to 20 l/min 7 kW

Transmit Antenna Selector (TAS) at inflow of gradient coil n. a. n. a.

1.2.2 Water Requirements

n Water type: Pure / Distilled Water
n Temperature: 19˚ to 22˚ C
n Static filling pressure: 1.7 bar

1.2.3 ACS
All four fans blow air outside. When the cooling system is switched on, fans 1 and 2
switch on immediately. After the control board has initialized, fans 3 and 4 switch on. Be‐
fore fans 3 and 4 switch on, the prevailing air flow may cause their blades to turn back‐
wards.
There is no air temperature sensor inside the ACS.

Introduction 1 9

1.3 Primary Water Circuit

The primary water circuit provides cooling for the internal secondary water circuit.

1.3.1 Cooling Water Supply

For the primary water supply there are two possibilities:
n ICS passive uses the primary cooling water supplied by the customer from an in-house
supply or a separate chiller.
n ICS active has a build-in primary cooling circuit including a water-to-air heat exchang‐
er, the so-called External Fan Unit (EFU), positioned outside. The water hose length
between ICS active and EFU is 20 m and can be optionally prolonged to 40 m by an
additional 20 m hose set.

1.3.2 Water Requirements

Requirements for the ICS passive:
n Water type: n. a. (depends on customer chiller)
n Temperature: 6˚ to 12˚ C
n Flow rate: 30 l/min (for 12˚C)
n Static filling pressure: n. a. (depends on customer chiller)
Requirements for the ICS active:
n Water type: use the glycol/water mixture delivered with the system
n Temperature: n. a. (internally regulated)
n Flow rate: n. a. (internally regulated)
n Static filling pressure: 1.7 bar

 The primary water circuit of the ICS active has to be filled with the glycol/water mixture
from Siemens only!

A new ICS active is delivered with 75 l (plus additional 25 l for 40 m option) of glycol/
water mixture. Additionally, it can be ordered as a spare part in 25 l canisters.

NOTICE
Water-cooled components could be damaged by frost!
 Drain all water from FRUs before they are sent back.

2.1 General
ICS passive incorporates four functional blocks:
n Primary water circuit; most of it is supplied by the customer.
n Secondary water circuit, which cools all the system components mentioned in chapter

n Air conditioning system (ACS), providing air cooling for the GPA and the rest of the
ECA.

2.3 Electric Circuit

The electronics module in the ICS passive cabinet is located at the top
( 1/Fig. 5 Page 10).
It contains
n circuit breakers,
n contactors, and
n a printed circuit board (control unit)
to protect and control the active cooling system.

2.3.1 Supply and Circuit Breakers

The ICS passive is supplied by 25 A circuit breaker F103 in the Mains Connection Box. Us‐
ing terminal X101, the 3-phase supply is connected to the ICS active electronics module.

The ICS is directly connected to the local power supply via the Mains Connection
Box.
Incorrect voltage setting can damage components! Therefore, check and adjust
the voltage setting of
 the helium compressor for the magnet (MREF) and
 the transformer T1 in the electronics module.

The four fans in the ACS are supplied by 230 V AC taken from transformer T1. Contactor
 K2 is always energized. In earlier product versions, the two fans M13 and M14 could be
de-energized by the separate relay. With the Essenza this is no longer the case.

If E6 and E7 are off, there is a problem with the circuit breaker Q4.
If E6 is off but E7 is on, there is a problem with the EFU.

 Please be aware that the meanings of the LEDs are different on ICS active and ICS pas‐
sive, even though the board is identical.

3.3.2.2 K2270_2 Control Unit

In October, 2012, the second version of the ICS control unit was introduced. The interface
and operational functions are the same as with the first version. A-LEDs have been re‐
placed by K-LEDs, which retain the same functions but have different locations.

4.1 General
On site, there is another kind of ICS (K2278) produced in China. The design structure is
similar to the previous ICS except for the control processor and the user interface panel.
The water requirement is shown as illustrated below:
Primary Water

Passive Active
Water type n.a. ethylene glycol/water mixture
delivered with the system
Temperature 6 to 12 oC n.a.
Flow rate 30 l/min (for 12 oC) n.a.
Static filling pressure n.a. 0.2MPa ±0.02MPa

Secondary Water

Water type Pure / Distilled Water

Temperature 19 to 22 oC

4.3 Electric Circuit

The electronics module in the ICS active cabinet is located right above the helium com‐
pressor (MREF) for the magnet. ( 3/Fig. 15 Page 22)
It contains
n circuit breakers,
n contactors, and
n PCO3 controller and user interface
to protect and control the active cooling system.

4.3.1 Supply and Circuit Breakers

ICS active is supplied by 50 A circuit breaker F102 in the Mains Connection Box. Using ter‐
minal X102, the 3 phase supply is connected to the ICS active electronics module.

n 16: Thermal overload relay FR3 for Secondary water pump
n 17: Thermal overload relay FR4 for EFU

NOTICE
The ICS is directly connected to the local power supply via the Mains Connection
Box.
Incorrect voltage setting can damage components! Therefore, check and adjust
the voltage setting of
 the helium compressor for the magnet (MREF) and
 transformer T1 in the electronics module.

The four fans in the ACS are supplied by 230 V AC taken from transformer T1. Contactor
K5 is always energized. The possibility to de-energize the two fans (M13 and M14) is cur‐
rently not being used.

4.3.2 User Interface

The User Interface located in the middle of the cover of electronic cabinet which will be
seen when ICS door is opened.
The User Interface is responsible for the following tasks:

1. Displaying the status of ICS, such as current time, In/Out water temperature and so
on.
2. Configuration of various parameters and Alarm setting.
3. Indicating the error messages for trouble shooting.
