While negotiations are pending with Towards Employment and building owners, the new ownership
team hopes to keep operating at its current locations in downtown Cleveland and the Campus District,
with plans to expand to additional locations in the future.
Bloom Bakery opened in 2016 under the ownership of Towards Employment and has provided
employment and training opportunities for approximately 90 people since then. Unexpectedly,
Towards Employment announced on November 5, 2019, that it would be closing Bloom Bakery.
“We were surprised at this announcement and would have been interested in acquiring the business if
we had been given the opportunity,” said Logan Fahey, local entrepreneur and founder of Fahey
Group. Fahey and Chaplais worked on the start-up of Bloom Bakery, including the training of
employees on artisan baking techniques.
“In my years of involvement with Bloom Bakery, I have never been more committed to its social
mission than I am now,” Fahey said. “We have personally worked with so many Bloom
employees whose lives have been changed by this business, and we will not let that mission die.
Our belief is that what we are doing is vital to the community.”
Fahey said Chaplais is planning to return to Cleveland to retrain employees and improve the
quality of the current product offerings. The new management team will be headed by Fahey,
Chaplais and Ellen Bruno, who was the original operations manager of Bloom Bakery and is
now chief operating officer of Fahey Group.
Fahey said the new ownership team’s long-term goal is to expand operations in Cleveland and its
suburbs, and eventually introduce the concept to other areas of Ohio and the country. “We have a
robust group of investors who are eager to ensure that the business will be back up and running
as soon as possible, and we hope to work with current Bloom Bakery staff and board,” he said.
