A Detailed Lesson Plan in Grade 7


I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:


a) Demonstrate an understanding of the literary text, A Night in the Hills, by providing sensible
responses to the questions raised;
b) Identify the elements of short story from the selection;
c) Discuss the elements of short story using the story grammar, and
d) get the significance of the story through group discussion.

This time class, you are going to read a story that


the character has something to do with his dream in
life. The story is entitled “A Night in the Hill” by
Paz Marquez Benitez.

Let us now first the author in the story which


entitled “A Night in the Hill’’ by Paz Marquez-
Benitez

Who is Paz Marquez- Benitez?


 The first Filipino modern English-language
short story "Dead Stars"
 She was born on March 3, 1894 in Lucena
City, Quezon.
 She taught at the University of the
Philippines’ English department from 1916
to 1951, acquiring a reputation as an
outstanding teacher.
 She became an influential figure to many
Filipino writers in the English language,
Loreto Paras Sulit, Paz Latorena,
Bienvenido Santos, Manuel Arguilla.
 She married UP College of Education Dean
Francisco Benítez, with whom she had four
children.
 She died on November 10, 1983.

All right, you will be divided into five groups,


kindly form a circle. I will give a time to read the
story on pages 125- 133. You will be working as a
group to answer the following question in the story.

Guidelines questions:
1. What is the story all about?
2. What is Gerardo’s dream? What caused him
to have that particular desire?
3. Why is Gerardo’s wife not in favor in his
ambition?
4. What were his expectations about the
forest? Were those expectations met when
he finally experienced the way of life in the
forest?
5. How did he feel or react after spending
some time in the hills?
6. What were his realizations after awaking up
dawn in the forest?
7. What is the moral lesson in the story?
