Overfishing

The populations of maritime on the sea are started to vanish, this is caused by human negligence. The
illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU) is one of many kinds of things that humans did. The
human did it on purposes but it affects our environment, so we can’t let it be worse than before. The
illegal fishing caused by overfishing can cause so much damages to our environment, like decreased
biodiversity and many more, so we need to save our environment.

Overfishing activities that occur in Indonesia are caused by neighboring countries looking for catches in
Indonesian regions. This activity is carried out to meet the needs of production and marketing. Although
some territorial waters in Indonesia such as the North Coast of Java, parts of the Malacca Strait, the
South Coast of Sulawesi and the Bali Strait have experienced overfishing, but there are still quite a lot of
fish resources in several other Indonesian regions such as Natuna and ZEEI (Indonesian Exclusive
Economic Zone) in the South China Sea and other border sea areas. But this does not rule out the
possibility that fish resources in Indonesia will be reduced due to overfishing activities.

Overfishing causes a lot of damage to the sea area. Critics say that overfishing causes the richness of the
ocean to be sucked up, to reduce the biodiversity in the sea, and to decrease important marine
ecosystem services (Miller and Spoolman, 2015). This can cause our marine wealth to be endangered or
even exhausted. Also, overfishing can cause larger predatory species to decrease, thus causing the
reproduction of species such as jellyfish to grow rapidly and can disrupt the seafood chain (Miller and
Spoolman, 2015). If the seafood chain is disrupted, it can cause a reduction in certain species so that it
causes extinction.

Eradication of illegal fishing is an effort to save fish resources at sea. With the regulation of the State
Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, the perpetrators of illegal fishing were forcibly evicted from
the Indonesian sea. To make the Indonesian sea empty for a while then fish resources in the sea can
multiply and grow. Petrossian (2015) states that the capacity of MCS (Monitoring, Control, and
Surveillance) and close supervision are important variables in controlling IUU. But according to Johns
(2013), regional action plans cannot completely improve IUU, therefore a coordinated regional action is
needed with the support of international capacity development.

Overfishing can cause a lot of damage at sea. Damages that occur such as the extinction of wealth in the
sea to the disruption of the seafood chain caused by the reduction of large predators. To overcome the
activities of illegal fishing, it can be handled by the regulation of the State Minister of Maritime Affairs
and Fisheries which causes the perpetrators to be evicted by force and to carry out strict supervision of
this phenomenon because we must protect the surrounding environment because otherwise, we will
feel the consequences.
