Answer all questions.

Question 1

a. Explain briefly the meaning of prismatic bar. Draw a free body diagram of a prismatic
bar disregarding weight of bar loaded by tensile forces P at both ends. (4 marks)

b. Figure 1b shows a cylindrical shaft. Determine the maximum shearing stress caused
by a torque of magnitude T= 2.4 kNm. (4
marks)

Figure 1b

c. Member AC as shown in Figure 1c is subjected to a vertical force of 4 kN .

Determine the position x of this force so that the average compressive stress at C
is equal to the average tensile stress in the tie rod AB. The rod has a cross-sectional
area of 300 mm2 and the contact area at C is 550 mm

d. The beam has a rectangular cross section and is made of wood having an allowable
shear stress of τ allow =20 MPa . Determine the maximum shear force V that can
be developed in the cross section of the beam. (6 marks)

a. The steel wires AB and AC support the 200kg mass. If the allowable axial stress for
the wires is, σ allow =130 MPa , determine:
i. the required diameter of each wire. (6 marks)
ii. what is the new length of the wire AB after the load is applied? (3 marks)
Take the upstretched length of AB to be 750 mm , Est =200 GPa .

b. A loading crane consisting of a steel girder ABC, supported by a cable BD is

subjected to a load P as shown in Figure 2b. The cable has an effective cross-
2
sectional area A=481 mm . The dimensions of the crane are
H=2.5 m , L1=3.0 m, L2=1.5 m.
i. If the load P=32 kN , what is the average tensile stress in the cable?
(7 marks)
ii. If the cable stretches by 5.1mm, what is the average strain? (2 marks)

c. The timber beam is to be loaded as shown in Figure 2c. If the ends supports are only
in vertical forces, determine the greatest magnitude of P that can be applied. Given

b. Briefly descibe the term stress and strain. (4 marks)

c. If the gap between C and the rigid wall at D is initially 0.15 mm as shown in
Figure 3c, determine the support reactions at A and D when the force
P=200 kN is applied. The assembly is made of A36 steel. The modulus of
elasticity for S36 steel is 200GPa
