CE A161: Design of Concrete Structures I

S.Y. 2018-2019 Second Semester

Activity # 8
Design for Shear Reinforcement

Direction: Analyze the problem carefully. Using NSCP 2010 Code, calculate and present
your solution neatly and clearly. Support your solution with drawings when necessary.

Problem 1: A beam having a width of 350 mm has an effective depth of 530 mm. Concrete
cover measured from the centroid of tension bar is 70 mm. It is reinforced with 4 - 28
mm ∅. Use f′c = 25 MPa and fyt = 380 MPa. Consider a normal weight concrete.

a. If the beam is subject to shear and flexure only, determine the shear strength of
concrete using simplified calculation.

b. If the beam is subject to shear and flexure action with Vu = 200 kN and Mu = 106 kN-
m, determine the shear strength of concrete using the detailed calculation.

c. If the beam is subject to axial compression with Nu = 300 kN, determine the shear
strength of concrete using simplified calculation.

d. If the beam is subject to axial tension with Nu = 300 kN, determine the shear strength
of concrete using simplified calculation.

e. If the beam is subject to Vu = 200 kN, Nu = 300 kN, and Mu = 106 kN-m, determine
the shear strength of concrete using detailed calculation.

Problem 2: A beam below is subjected to a concentrated dead load of 250 kN and a

distributed live load of 55 kN/m. The beam has a width of 400 mm and effective depth of
520 mm. Concrete cover measured from the centroid of main steel bar is 80 mm. Use f’c
= 25 MPa, fyt = 380 MPa. Use a normal weight concrete having a unit weight of 24
kN/m3. Consider 10 mm ∅ stirrups. Determine the following:

a. Ultimate shear at critical section 250 kN ω = 55 kN/m

b. Shear provided by the concrete
c. Shear provided by the stirrups
A C
d. Minimum shear area required B
e. Maximum spacing of stirrups
3m 3m 3m

Note: Make assumptions when necessary.
