Abstract:
Kinematics are one of the main components of mechanics related to motion it is vital that we demonstrate kinematics
by I.) Determining the average velocity of a dynamics cart, II.) Determination of acceleration due to gravity using the
carts acceleration, III.) And finally determining acceleration due to gravity using a picket fence and a smart timer. We
first performed finding the average velocity of a dynamic cart by setting up the track on table with the end stop marked
at 118cm then we adjusted the position of track similar to the table and made sure that the cart is motionless. One
member then installed the picket fence to the cart then acquired photogate 1 fitted with a bracket starting at 25cm
while photogate 2 is measured at 65cm. Then another member attached a smart timer and began launching the cart to
measure the average speed of the cart and the recorded time. It was repeated five times. Our second task is the same
as the first one however the initial height is 5cm per trial and increases incrementally by 2cm. and then we find the
acceleration and time using a smart timer and calculate the total displacement of the cart for 5 trials. And lastly
determining the latter using a picket fence and compute the acceleration of the timer for 5 trials, its average and %
error.

Objectives:
Our experiments objective is to (I) define and comprehend concept kinematics regarding acceleration the effect of
gravity. (II) to be skilled in using a smart timer and accurately getting the measurements needed. And lastly (III.) to
compute and analyze the average acceleration and the gravity.

Result and Discussion:

Motion change at different positions over time. As it passes, your position varies unknowingly. Sometimes
people tend to alter the position instinctively. In our experiment, in part 1, we were asked to determine the
Average Velocity of a Dynamic Cart. From letting the cart pass from the first photogate up to the second
and the last photogate to determine and observe their speed while adjusting the position of the second
photogate. In the first experiment, we obtained these results:

Trial Position of the Cart’s Time Average Speed

Photogate Displacement

1 65 cm 40 cm 0.7308 s 54. 7345 cm/s

2 75 cm 50 cm 0.7409 s 67. 4854 cm/s

3 85 cm 60 cm 1.0260 s 58. 4795 cm/s

4 95 cm 70 cm 1.5876 s 44. 0917 cm/s

5 105 cm 80 cm 1.2843 s 62. 2907 cm/s

We noticed that every time that we adjust the position of the second photogate, the time travel of the cart
becomes slower. The farther the photogate gets, the slower the cart. In the second part of the experiment,
we determine the acceleration due to gravity by using the acceleration of the cart. In this part, the ramp is
the one who is adjusting unlike in the first part, the photogate is adjusting. By this, we obtained the results:

Trial Height of track Acceleration Sin theta g Time

1 5 cm 40.2 cm/s2 0.0417 964.0288 1.7563 s

cm/s2

2 7 cm 55.1 cm/s2 0.0583 945.1115 1.5002 s

cm/s2

3 9 cm 74.6 cm/s2 0.0750 994.6667 1.2893 s

cm/s2

4 11 cm 92.8 cm/s2 0.0917 1011.9956 1.559 s

cm/s2

5 13 cm 103.1 cm/s2 0.1083 1016.6205 1.0967 s

cm/s2

After completing the table, we noticed that every time the height is being increased, the gravity and the
acceleration of the cart becomes faster than the cart with low ramps. It shows that the more height you take
place, the faster of your fall. That is why gravity is the reason why we don’t float because it keeps us to the
ground. By these experiments, we understand the kinematics more.
