4.4 Guide Questions


1. Does the area of contact affect the coefficient of friction? Defend your answer

Based on the formula 𝑓 = 𝜇𝑁 and observations during the experiment, the frictional force over coefficient
of friction is independent of the area of contact.

2. Why is it necessary to observe uniform motion of the block in each procedure of the experiment?

Uniform motion means no acceleration. No acceleration means that there is no net force acting on the
block. If there is no net force, then the magnitude of the kinetic friction force is equal to the component of the weight
force.
