Airbnb says it will
spend the next year ver-
ifying that all 7 million of
its listings are accurate
and that the homes and
rooms being offered for
short-term stays meet ba-
sic quality standards.
It’s one of several moves
the San Francisco-based
company is making to im-
prove user trust and make
it easier for guests, hosts
and others to report prob-
lems and obtain refunds
when things go awry.
The changes come after
The grants were known
as Transportation Invest-
ment Generating Econom-
ic Recovery, or TIGER Dis-
cretionary Grants, when
the city first developed an
interest in obtaining one
for Highway 182 about a
decade ago, Spruill said.
The city applied for the
grant off and on before
applying for three consec-
utive years, she said.
“We were persistent
enough for three years in
a row that we finally got it
awarded,” she said.
The grant is an 80/20
match, meaning it will cost
the city about $3.5 million,
but the benefits of the
project outweigh the cost,
Spruill said.
Oktibbeha County,
Mississippi State Universi-
ty, the Mississippi Depart-
ment of Transportation,
both of Mississippi’s U.S.
senators and U.S. Rep. Mi-
chael Guest (R-Brandon)
all helped advocate for
Starkville to receive the
grant.
Guest, U.S. Rep. Steven
Palazzo (R-Biloxi) and U.S.
Sens. Roger Wicker and
Cindy Hyde-Smith, also
Republicans, worked to-
gether to secure the grant
for Starkville and a $20.46
million grant for Gulfport,
according to a joint press
release from the four Con-
gressional offices.
“The addition of this
infrastructure will help re-
vitalize parts of Starkville
and bring even more mod-
ern technology and busi-
ness opportunity to our
district,” Guest said in the
release.
Northern District Com-
missioner Mike Tagert
wrote a letter of support to
DOT and helped provide
information for the city to
improve its grant applica-
tion, he said.

The Beaty’s fashion store
first opened in east Columbus,
moved to Highway 45 and has
been on the corner of Fifth
Street since 2002. Through-
out the years, Beaty said he’s
enjoyed the downtown company
and having an ideal location for
customers to shop.
“It was a family business. My
two daughters (Shilo Goodman
and Erica Allison) loved it,”
Beaty said. “They were a part of
it and they worked hard.”
He’ll likely list the building
for sale, but has not advertised
a price yet. The corner building
boasts 4,600 square feet on
floor level with an additional
1,000 square feet on the upper
level.
“I’ve got two or three people
commenting already,” Beaty
laughed. “I’ll be a Realtor for a
while, I guess.”

The spa downtown first
opened in 2006, celebrating its
13th anniversary this month.
Owner Melissa Rushing
announced on the company’s
Facebook page the spa would
close in Columbus and reopen
in Madison early 2020.
Rushing added the compa-
ny’s relocation to Madison was
due to her daughter’s diagnosis
with Rett Syndrome.
“It is because of that, that I
must relocate our family to a
larger city so that she can have
the educational and medical
resources she needs in a more
centralized and affordable way,”
she posted.
The spa’s last day in Colum-
bus was Oct. 31. All gift cards

of the Columbus community
for many years and we be-
lieve the new locations, which
enjoys much more traffic in

store concept, will be very well
received by the community,”
Dale emailed The Dispatch.
“We are excited about this new
project and think it will be a
great addition to Columbus.”
Dale added the property
owner, Bruce Derrick, is also
looking to lease two more sites
at the development in addition
to Marvin’s. Though Marvin’s
remains as the only signed
tenant, Dale said “most likely
a fast food restaurant and a
bank” could come to Columbus
Crossing.

Second Ave. Nutrition will close
permanently Nov. 15.
Michael and Rachel Womack
first opened the nutrition store,
424 Second Ave. N., in May,
closing after nearly six months
of business. The closure was
announced on the company’s
Facebook page. When con-
tacted, the owners declined to
comment.

be said of her tenure with
the club.
“It almost feels like it
was pre-ordained,” she
said. “You can look at some
of my journals from grade
school. Even then, work-
ing with children was what
I wanted to do.”
While working toward
her master’s degree at New
York University, Colom
worked with after-school
programs there.
“I felt so guilty,” she
said. “I kept thinking, ‘I
should be doing this back
home.’”
After returning home,
she took a job with the Co-
lumbus Municipal School
District, where she was in
charge of the high school’s
college and career pro-
gram through a federal
grant.
After the grant expired,
Colom was hired as direc-
tor for the Columbus Boys
and Girls Club, then took
over as executive director
for all the Golden Triangle
clubs in September 2013,
replacing Joyce Ellenwood,
who left for a job in Florida.
During her tenure,
the club has grown in just
about every way imagin-
able — more kids in the
programs, more federal
grants and donations, es-
tablishing an annual giv-
ing program, an expansion
that opened a club in West
Point in June 2018 and in-
creased training and key
staff additions, including
a full-time grant writer
who Colom said has been
a godsend for the nonprof-
it. Under her leadership,
the club also formed a
mentorship program with
the Mississippi School for
Math and Science.
Colom said she leaves
the club debt-free.

“She’s done an out-
standing job for us, and has
been invaluable in helping
the club grow,” said cur-
rent board president Rog-
er Bentinck-Smith. “She’s
got such a positive attitude
and works so well with the
board and staff. As far as
the public side of it, she’s
been a great ambassador
for the club.”
Roy Ruby, the board
president when Colom was
hired, said the club hit a
home-run when it hired
her in 2012.
“Nadia is an excellent
leader,” Ruby said. “She’s
very intelligent, hardwork-
ing, exactly what the Boys
and Girls Club needed.
She was above all expecta-
tions.”
A team effort
The club is currently
working on two major cap-
ital improvement projects
— one in Starkville, where
it is working with Oktibbe-
ha County and Starkville
officials to renovate and
expand the J.L. King Cen-
ter with plans to relocate
the club from its current
location to a bigger build-
ing with kitchen facilities
— and the other in West
Point, where the club is
working with West Point
schools to renovate and
expand Northside School
to accommodate growth
there.
Of all the accomplish-
ments, one that resonates
most with the “mom” in
Colom is the addition of the
club’s nutrition program in
Columbus, one she hopes
will soon be extended to
the other clubs.
“When I got here, I was
driving back and forth to
Tupelo to Sam’s Club to
get snacks for the chil-
dren,” she said. “Kids are
hungry when they get in
from school. We had staff
making $7.25 an hour part-
time, using their own mon-
ey to go to Walmart to buy
snacks. I knew we had to
do something about that.”
Today, children at the
Columbus club not only get
snacks, but hot meals in
both the after-school and
summer programs.
“I’m really proud of
that,” Colom said.

a total of 697 registered
kids and an average daily
attendance of 311 among
the three clubs. She said
the growth of the club was

Keep it up, letter writers!
O
ver the past few weeks,
we’ve noticed a new de-
velopment and while we
are not sure its cause, we are
hoping it continues and even
grows.
We are talking about the
Letters to the Editor submitted
to The Dispatch.
If you are a regular reader,
you have probably noticed
there are more letters written
by more people about more
subjects. Although we have
long encouraged readers to
share their views in this forum,
the increase appears to have
come organically. We’d like to
take credit for it, but we can’t.
Even so, we could not be
more delighted with the new
voices providing new view-
points on topics old and new.
Until recently, Letters to the
Editor had been few, most of
them written by a small group
of readers and often devoted to
the same topics. It’s no knock
of those regular contribu-
tors — some have developed
something of a following — but
we are happy to see more and
more new faces join the conver-
sation.
Make no mistake, we want
our Opinion page to be a forum
for our readers to discuss
a wide range of issues. The
page was never intended to
be a lecture, but a community
discussion. The only way that
happens is for readers to con-
tribute their thoughts.
We certainly don’t wish to
confine or inhibit the discus-
sion, but if you will permit us
one piece of advice, it would be
the advice that has been given
to aspiring writers for genera-
tions: Write what you know.
While there is no dearth of
well-crafted opinion writing
on the big national topics of
the day, there are often topics
and issues right here in our
community that won’t be raised
unless local readers take them
up. That’s important.
Few of us — no matter how
articulate we may be — are
likely to change world affairs
through what we write. Yet
when we write about things
right here in our community,
the prospects of raising aware-
ness of an issue, engaging each
other in seeking a solution
and seeing the problem to its
resolution is often a tangible
goal. This is especially true

Response to Bill Parker’s challenge
I accept your challenge, Mr. Parker, to name at least
one positive thing President Trump has done.
Those of us who are VFW’s — veterans of foreign wars
— are aware of one great accomplishment of our President
if nothing else. There is so much that he has accomplished,
just in the VA department, but I have room to mention only
a few.
1.President Trump signed an executive order for veterans
to receive care outside of the Veterans Affairs Medical Sys-
tem in January 2018. No other president has done that, sir.
2.The remains of 55 American serviceman departed
South Korea on July 27th, 2018, for the United States, a
visible result of President Trump’s promise to bring home
American serviceman killed during the Korean War. No
other president would do that, sir.
3.President Trump donated his first-quarter salary to
the Department of Veterans Affairs in May 2018. No other
president would do that, sir.
Room for one more thing I guess: President Trump
moved our embassy to Jerusalem, recognizing it as the capi-
tal city of Israel. No other President would do that. And one
more thing — everybody should know this — he gave the
greatest tax break of all times to citizens like me.
I’m assuming by your very negative remarks, nothing
specific, that you are not a VFW and you get all your news
from the liberal media. It would be easy for you to use your
PC to get the real news, not the negative fake stuff that’s fed
by the liberal agenda outlets to include the late night “hate
trump” talkers.

cret Service and Trump’s staff had
agreed.
“She just said, ‘Liza, this is Cin-
dy. I’ve shown your video to the
president and to Jared Kushner,
and on behalf of the White House,
we want to invite your class to see
the president in Tupelo,’” Miley re-
membered. “I was like, ‘What? This
can’t be real.’”

But it was real. Hyde-Smith
told Miley only one class could
meet Trump, so Miley quickly ar-
ranged for the students to take an
after-school field trip to Tupelo on
Friday, where Trump was holding a
rally at BancorpSouth Arena.
The 28 students, along with Mi-
ley and some other NHMS staff
were a handful of thousands of
people from both in and outside of
Mississippi who attended the ral-
ly. Outside the arena, the students
bumped into Mississippi Gov.-elect
Tate Reeves — which was not part
of the plan, Miley said — and talk-
ed with him for a while. Through
the course of the afternoon and
evening, the students also met

kids can vote. But they still took the
time to make a difference in their
life with something they’ll always
remember.”
For a class full of students who
told The Dispatch they wanted to
go into politics and media — includ-
ing one who wants to be president,
one vice president and one mayor
of Columbus — it was “exciting,”
said Anthony Fore, the student who
wants to be president.
“They were, I think, blown away
by all the Secret Service and press,”
Miley said of the students.
At the arena, the students were
taken to a back room where they
were checked by Secret Service
agents for a second time. Only then
did they meet the president.
“He said, ‘Hey, y’all,’” remem-
bered Kyler Gray. “And we said,
‘Hey, Mr. President.’”
Trump only had a couple of min-
utes to talk to the students, but
Hayden Wofford said Trump asked
which of them was the most athlet-
ic.
“(It was) me,” Wofford added,
though Miley said many students
claimed the title.
Miley, the students and oth-
er chaperons all lined up to have
a photo taken with the president
and those who wanted campaign
swag received it, including hats
and shirts bearing “Make America
Great,” “USA” and “45.” The group
also attended the rally.
Miley said she’s extremely
grateful to Hyde-Smith, Trump and
his staff for allowing her students
such a unique opportunity.
“I just hope that they just realize
what an opportunity this was to be
able to meet basically the most pow-
erful man of the world,” she said.
The students reported a variety
of reactions — Beckwith was sur-
prised how different Trump looked
in real life from TV, Davon Gray
called it a “weird experience” and
Fox said his “heart dropped.” But
the students, even those who said
they don’t like Trump’s politics,
agreed it was a great experience.
“I was surprised to see how tall
he was,” said Jaiden Linebarker. “It
was surprising that I’ve seen the
president.”

always made Hannah feel
respected and appreciat-

nomination letter before
presenting the award.
Hannah’s mother, Lisa
Stricklin, described Mul-
rooney as “thoughtful and
loving” but with a “special
place in her heart” for mil-
itary children. When Han-
nah’s stepfather returned
from his deployment, Mul-
rooney helped organize
a surprise for Hannah at
school.
Taking Hannah un-
der her wing is part of
her job as a teacher, Mul-
rooney said, and she did
not think she necessarily
went “above and beyond”
because she hopes to form
positive relationships with
all her students.
“It amazes and humbles
me to know (Hannah) felt
it was as great as it was,”
Mulrooney said. “It kind of
refreshes me and reminds
me that my job is impact-
ful and important and that
I’m on the right track.”

But for the former
Penn State offensive coor-
dinator, this year has of-
fered a chance to refresh
his ever-growing booklet
of coaching knowledge
and take on the challenge
of the unknown.
“You know it’s my sec-
ond time sitting in the big
seat — certainly this time
at a higher level,” Moor-
head said, referencing
his lone previous head
coaching tenure at Ford-
ham. “In my experienc-
es at Penn State, UConn
and Akron — which was
1A football — you talk to
other coaches and try and
bend their ear and gain
wisdom and insight, but
there’s never a spot in the
manual for some of the
things that pop up, and
you’re not prepared for
(them). So you try to flip
through your head coach
manual that you use, and
there’s just some things
in there that aren’t in the
table of contents.”
Following an 8-5 debut
campaign, the Bulldogs
were expected to regress
some — though not as
much as they have. Giv-
en the departures of NFL
first-round draft picks
Johnathan Abram, Mont-
ez Sweat and Jeffery Sim-
mons, the defense was
left without playmakers
and vocal leaders.
Offensively, quarter-
back Nick Fitzgerald —
who concluded his MSU
career as the program’s
all-time leading rusher —
left a gaping hole at the
game’s most important
position. Graduate trans-
fer Tommy Stevens was
expected to fill that void,
but injuries and ineffec-
tive play have forced him
in and out of the lineup.
Freshman Garrett
Shrader enrolled mid-
year and looked bound for
a redshirt, but Stevens’
circumstances forced
a nagging lower-body in-
jury kept him off the field
in last week’s win over Ar-
kansas.
Beyond the depar-
tures, the suspensions
of 10 players due to their
part in the NCAA scandal
involving a tutor complet-
ing coursework for the
involved athletes have left
the MSU’s depth chart
further depleted.

The Patriots are 11-
0, the No. 1 seed in the
MAIS Class 5A playoffs.
They haven’t played a
game within nine points
yet this season. Their de-
fense hasn’t given up 14
points in a single game
this year. And their av-
erage margin of victory
is just over 28 points per
game — yes, Heritage
Academy has been better
than its opponents by four
touchdowns this season.
So as the Patriots pre-
pare for their first playoff
game after last week’s
bye week, Harrison is
simply enjoying the ride.
“It’s a blast,” Harrison
said. “It’s a lot of fun. This
coaching staff, these
kids, we’ve had a really
good time this year.”
It’s easy for Harrison,
he said, when he doesn’t
have to coach effort. His
players have taken it upon
themselves to play hard
each and every week
and never seem to let the
pressure get to them.
“We preach a lot that
leadership should be hor-
izontal, not vertical,” Har-
rison said. “We don’t have
top-down leadership.”

ry targets, the Patriots have
found great success through
the air, and there’s no reason
that trend shouldn’t continue
Friday.
“They’ve got good lineback-
ers, but I think our receivers
are just good,” Hannon said.
With a small roster, those
talented receivers essential-
ly double as the secondary
— sophomore Wesley Miller,
senior Noel Fisher, Hannon
and Hyde form the unit. With
Acker and John Jackson on
the defensive line and Long
and senior KJ Smith leading
the way at linebacker, the Pa-
triots’ defense has been per-
haps more dominant than its
offense. Heritage allows just
8.5 points per game and hasn’t
given up more than 13 points
in any contest this season.
In Tuesday’s practice, Har-
rison, running the scout team
offense against his defensive
starters, noticed the perfect
example of the Patriots’ speed
on defense.
“When we hand the ball
off, there’s a big hole,” he said.
“Before they can get to the
line of scrimmage, there’s four
people there.”
Heritage Academy will
need that kind of speed
against Leake senior running
back Wyatt Estep, a longtime
thorn in the Patriots’ side.
“He’s one of those guys that
I feel like has been over there
for 15 years,” Harrison said.
“I’m kind of tired of seeing
him. Ready to see him go.”
Estep leads a tricky Reb-
els offense that will give the
Patriots a number of different
looks.
“They’re always kind of a
pain to prepare for because
they do a lot as far as forma-
tions,” Harrison said. “You al-
ways have to prepare because
they’re gonna come out in
something new, at least on the
first drive.”
Harrison knows the Reb-
els well from prior history be-
tween the two teams. Leake
was Heritage Academy’s sec-
ond-round opponent last sea-
son, as well, and though the
Patriots won that game 43-13,
they fell to Adams County
Christian the following week
in the state semifinals to put
an end to a strong 10-3 season.
So they know they can’t af-
ford to slip up again in the play-
offs, where one error could be
their last.
“You have to be mentally
strong and tough enough to
know that that was the reg-
ular season and this is the
playoffs,” Long said. “It’s a to-
tally different ballgame. Every
team is good. You won’t get
away with the same mistakes
you were able to make in the
regular season.”
Having that mindset actual-
ly helps to reduce the pressure
of following up an 11-0 regular
season, Long said. All that
matters is Friday at 7 p.m.
“We’re starting over now,”
he said. “Your regular-season
record doesn’t matter, be-
cause now it’s win or go home.
It’s 1-0 every week. I feel like
we should be fine.”
