1. A trapezoidal footing is to be proportioned to support BTL-3 Applying CO304.3 PO1,
two square columns of 30cm and 50cm sides PO3
respectively. Columns are 6m apart and the safe
bearing capacity of the soil is 400kN/m2. The bigger
column carries a load of 500kN and the smaller caries a
load of 3000kN. Design a suitable size of the footing so
that it does not extend beyond the face of the columns.
2. Write the IS codal provisions for design of raft BTL-1 Remembering CO304.3 PO1,
foundations. PO3
3. Briefly discuss the various types of footing with neat BTL-1 Remembering CO304.3 PO1
sketch.

4. (i) Explain the design procedure of a combined BTL-1 Remembering CO304.3 PO1,
footing. BTL-2 Understanding PO2,
(ii) List out the various factors considered in PO3
earthquake area.
5. Explain the procedure for designing the PCC strip BTL-1 Remembering CO304.3 PO3
footings.

6. Design a square footing to carry a load of 1000kN on a BTL-3 Applying CO304.3 PO1,
column 300 x 300mm, allowable soil pressure PO3
200kN/m2. Permissible stress 500kN/m2. Use M20 and
Fe415 steel.
7. A strip footing 2m wide carries a load intensity of BTL-5 Evaluating CO304.3 PO1,
400kN/m2 at a depth of 1.2m in sand. The saturated PO3
unit weight of sand is 19.5kN/m3 and unit weight above
water table is 16.8kN/m3. The shear strength
parameters are c = 0 and Ф=35˚. Determine the factor
of safety with respect to shear failure for the following
cases of location of water table. Determine the ultimate
bearing capacity of the footing, if the ground water
table is located (a) at a depth of 0.5m below the ground
surface, (b) at a depth of 0.5m below the base of the
footing, (c) at the base of the footing, (d) at the ground
level. Use Terzaghi theory.
8. Proportion a strap footing for the following data. The BTL-3 Applying CO304.3 PO1,
allowable soil pressure for DL + reduced LL is PO3
150kN/m2 and for DL + Ll is 250kN/m2. Centre to
centre distance between the columns is 5m and the
projection beyond column A is not to exceed 0.5m. The
column loads are tabulated below.
Loads Column A Column B
DL 600kN 750kN
LL 400kN 880kN
9. Two adjacent columns are to be supported by a BTL-3 Applying CO304.3 PO1,
trapezoidal combined footing. The heavier column PO3
carries a load of 5000kN and size of 500mm x 500mm.
The lighter column carries a load of 3500kNwith a size
of 350mm x 350mm. The columns are 5.3m c/c. Take
allowable bearing capacity as 320kN/m2. Assume the
heavier column is on the property line. Proportion a
suitable foundation.
