ABSTRACT
Makeups covers facial flaws and enhance one’s self-confidence and interpersonal
relations. Not only does it serve as clothing for the face, makeup has become a medium
that connects human emotion. This researcher study was conducted to determine the
significant effect of wearing make up of the Senior High School Female Students of
Mabini National Highschool with the intention of appearance enhancement. In other
words, the purpose of the research is to educate how psychological traits may affect
makeup involvement and satisfaction. This research presents literature to further
understand and support the significance that society and individuals place on beauty.
This chapter explained and provided examples of the perception of beauty and its
impact on how individuals judge one another, key points being that society judges
attractive individuals to be more seccessful, socially adopt, and happier. As well, this
chapter discussed the importance beauty has when assessing self-esteem, confidence
and desirability. Again it is deemed that individuals that are considered to be beautiful
are assumed to be have a higher self-esteem and confidence. It was also found that
being considered desirable was related to attractiveness which generated more interest
from the opposite sex. Chapter IV discusses the methods and procedures used in order
to collect data to futher examine the research problem.

Introduction

BACKGROUD OF THE STUDY

Some students seem naturally enthusiastic about having a make up especially for the girls.
Teenagers now a days are very conscious about their appearance especially to the girls. When
you decide to have a make up you started to look into yourself the confidence. Self esteem is a
form of confidence and satisfaction in oneself ( Merriam Webster,2016).Many women associate
there physical appearance with their over all confidence and self esteem. Other are wearing
make up to cover up thier imperfections and highlight certain points in their face, which makes
them feel more confident by wearing make up ( Scoft and Kaplan,2015). According to Cimagala
(2017) there are usual factors that go into this phenomenon are the human problems that people
can have which they do not know how to cope up. Some law economic or social status, personal
problems involving temperament and emotions, family , mistakes and failures , committed,
expectations not met, frustrations, disapointment and also physical apperance.
Women are more self conscious to wear more make up and judge themselves to be more
attractive. They might act more confidence in a positive way. This self-fulfilling prophecy may
reinforce the belief that they look better when they wear makeup. Some of young adolescence
feel that they’re experience are perceived by others that they’re appearance are somehow
related to anxiety or challenges that aren’t the same because of the privilege. They exercise
wearing a certain dress, wear make up because society and culture made them feel it wasn’t
enough the way they was ( Doyle S, 2017). Self esteem simply means how you estimate yourself.
We all struggle with self esteem. We are constantly facing images massage to better ourselves (
Amrita S, 2012)/

The majority of United States teens have self esteem issues that will follow them into
adulthood. A girl’s self esteem is more likely strong related to how she views her own self than
the normal she was ( Linton, 2014).

In Mindoro State College of Agriculture and Technology, Calapan city. They proved that the
First year student from the selected HEIs have a high self esteem . Hernandez R. ( 2017) cited
the indicators about social relationship presented to be the least comparing to the other indicators
which are the physical attributes, self efficacy, and self regard. Motivating ourselves in a
presentable way can increase self confidence.

In Davao Catholic Herald their is an observation that even young people can have a very low
self esteem. They are usually shy and withdrawn most likely they suffer a range of anomalies
and irregularities like self pity, doupts and fear depression, etc. ( Cimagala, 2017).

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The purpose of this study is to know if wearing make up can increase women self esteem .This
paper is focus on how the Female Senior High School students motivate themselves and how
can it help them by building self esteem.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1. What is the average level of self esteem of female senior high school students ?
2. What is the average preference of female senior high school students in applying make
up?
3. Is there a significant difference between the application of make up and to the self esteem
of female senior high school students?
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study is significant for it may provide deeper insights about make up and self esteem of
female sinor high school students. Having low self esteem is one of human problem, which may
lead into disapointment. It could be a guide and may provide a meaningful result about the issue.

Female students. The result may offer additional research that may indicate that the SHS
students has to do with make up and self esteem especially for the girls.

Parents. This research results may help them to have an additional knowledge. It will help them
to have deeper insights if make up has to do with self esteem.

Teachers. This research result will help them to understand and analyze, why some students
are wearing make up at school.

School. The result may also help them to be aware that the female SHS students are really
intendend to this issue

Future Researcher. This will help to guide them about this issues. The result of this research will
guide them to continue this research.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This scope of this study is about make up and self esteem of the female SHS students in
MNHS in the 1st semester fo 2019-2020.

The purpose of this study is to know the possible out come of wearing make up to the female
SHS students self esteem. At the same time this study indicates that there are other possible
opportunities to increase self esteem and motivate their self.

THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

Theories of self esteem usually focus on determining what measurable things impact or shape
a person’s ideas about individual self worth.Morris Rosenberg, studied the development of self
esteem . His theories proposed that self esteem develop more during the uncertainty of
adolescence. Rosenberg claims that self esteem is built on an evaluation of the self in
comparison with other persons. This means that adolesecents compare themselves to peer they
see around them to evaluate their value while thinking about how others might see
them.(Burke,P.,2002)

CHAPTER II

THE REVIEW OF THE RELATED LITERATURE

The review of related literature for this study focuses on the issues regarding the make up
and Self Esteem of Famale Senior High School Students in Mabini National High School this
studies also suggest that self-esteem serves a motivation function by making it more or less
likely that people will take care of themselves and explore their full potential.

Makeup is ferminity made tangible. Makeup can mean a lot of different things to a lot of
different woman. For many, makeup is a way to invoke one’s self (LaBelle, 1988). Using
different products, women can use makeup to explore and and portray thier own individuality.
According to Beausoleil (1992), many women report having different make up routines
depending on what they expect to do during the day. Women often engage in specific
appearance practice to distinguish between day and night looks, basic looks and looks for
special occasions, etc.”(Beausoleil, 1992). Cosmetics serves as a sign of feminininty in their
symbolization of stereotypical feminine values. They are often seen a way to enhance feminine
beauty ideals and serves to help women to conform to our society’s beauty expectations . In
America, women are constantly seeking ways to change their appearance to fit the America
ideal of beauty which they are bombarded with bythe media-big blue eyes, clear skin, rosy
cheeks, and pouty red lips (Poran, 2002). As cosmetics companies present the made-up face
as ideal, many women use makeup as an attempt to conform to these images of ideality.
According to Kelson, Kearney-Cooke, and Lansky (1990), there are certain pressures on
women to meet cultural standards, such as increased attention from the opposite sex and Idol
recognition From other females. Cultural definitions of feminine beauty vary with regard to body
size, skin complexion, hair length and color, and the use of adornments (Rich & Cash, 1993).

With cosmetics comes the promise of change towards this ideal image (Bloch & Richins,
1992). Many women may wear makeup with the belief that it will positively affect their level of
physical attractiveness. According to rich and cash (2002), upper-social class Caucasian
women, particularly adolescents and young adults, are the most dissatisfied with thier bodies. A
women can use cosmetics to both hide the things she does not like and accentuate the things
she does. Makeup holds the possibility for a women to personality transform herself, resulting in
an increase in self-confidence. A girl’s Initial experimentation with cosmetics in early
adolescence can be seen as a rite of passage as well as growth towards developing a feminine
identity (cash, 1985). It is during adolescence that females typically become more concerned
with their appearance, (Kelson, Kearney-Cooke, & Lansky, 1990). The berge and Kernaleguen
(1979) reported that as the use (and impotance) of cosmetics increased, women’s satisfaction
with their bodies also increased.

Studying the use of makeup by women is important to determine if there is a link between how
much they wear and when, and how it affects their confidence in a given situation.

Cosmetics are often a tool used for social self-presentation and self-image management.
For som women, especially those of adolescent and college-age, wearing makeup is partly due
to their concern for their cpmplexion and how they feel about themselves when others look at
their blemished skin. A blemished on the skin can lead to embarrassment, humiliation, or other
negative body-image experiences, which in turn can diminish self-esteem (Cash & Pruzinsky,
2002). Using cosmetics, such as foundation and concealer, can help a women hide facial
blemisheds and other abnormalities which cause her to feel self-conscious. Such use of facial
cosmetics may help to boost a woman’s sense of confidence in her appearance, thus making
her more self-assured overall. Several stusies have shown that makeup use by women is
associated with stringer feelings of attractiveness and femininity. Evidence also exists that
suggests women apply their makeup according to the situation they are preparing for. “it seems
that women’s appearance practices are almost society, or at least largely, determined by
concerns with situations, occasions, and audience,” (Beausolell, 1992).
The current study served as an initial exploration into the idea that confidence is
achieved when physical appearance (i.e makeup worn) matches the situation. The focus was on
college-age women and how makeup use affects their level of anxiety and overall confidence in
given situations. It was thought that the presence of makeup and the extent to which it is applied
would be the deciding factor. An experiment was conducted in which four women were asked to
varry the types of cosmetic products they used when going to class and going out with
girlfriends. It was hypothesized that the more makeup worn in each situation, the more confident
the women would feel about themselves.

METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN

The descriptive survey method was used in this today. The purpose of this method is find new
truths which may have different forms such as increased quality of knowledge, new
generalization, increased insights into factors which are operating the discovery of a casual
relationship.

The descriptive is valuable in providing facts on which scientific judgements may be based. It
provides essential knowledge about the nature of object and persons. It also plays large part in
the development of instruments for the measurements of many things, instruments that are
employed in all types of quantitative research as data gathering instruments.

This method is appropriate for the present investigation for it deals with the descriptions of
parental instrument in the make up and self esteem of female Senior High School students.
