INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY. CASE ANALYSIS OF A DOCUMENT.

1. What is the cause or environmental problem generated

according to the article and where it is developed.

According to the article, the cause of environmental problem it’s

by the tanneries that are dropping approximately 7.7 million liters
of waste per day in rivers like Buriganga and canals in Hazaribagh,
this water is commonly used for domestic supply in the nearby
community of the river. The wastewater produced by these
industries is contaminated by metals like Cr (chromium) and its
derived isotopes Cr(VI) and Cr(III).
The study was performed in Daka city, Bangladesh.

2. Which diseases can be presented by the handling of Cr

according to the article

Chromium can cause serious disease to all one who are expose to
it. Cr has toxic, genotoxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic effects,
causing negative health problems such as skin lesions, ulceration
and perforation of the nasal septum, eardrum perforation,
decreased spermatogenesis and lung carcinoma.

3. What is the effect of co-exposure to Cr (VI) and Cr (III)

The biological effects of coexposure to the range of molar ratios of

Cr(VI) and Cr(III) were examined using human non-tumorigenic
skin keratinocytes. The colony formation assay demonstrated for
the first time that coexposure synergistically promoted
transforming activity of HaCaT keratinocytes. MEK/ERK and AKT,
which regulate transforming activity were synergistically activated
by coexposure to Cr(VI) and Cr(III).

4. What is the conclusion of the study?

Study concludes that the carcinogenicity of Cr(VI) is increased in

the presence of Cr(III), suggesting the importance of removal of
Cr(III) in addition to Cr(VI) from water. Study of environmental
engineering finally showed that MFHT (magnesium and iron-based
hydrotalcite), a low-cost and high-efficacy depurative, can be used
for removal of both Cr(VI) and Cr(III), this not apply only to the
region in Daka City, it can help to solve the contamination on
rivers across the entire world.
5. Sustenance why this article is relevant for the
environmental epidemiology course.

This article is relevant for the environmental epidemiology course

due that help us to understand the problems that involves the
most important recourse in our planet, the water, how it be
contaminates with heavy metals that represent diseases to
humans and of course to investigate it, and generate solutions to
decontaminate rivers, canals and all other water effluents.
