What are our judges looking for?
A company working in the dairy industry, contributing to the suc-
cess of the dairy industry, you will demonstrate that as a direct
result of your business, and the activity, product or service you offer,
your contribution to the dairy industry is an exemplary one. You will
be investing in and confident of a bright future for the dairy. You can
enter this category but judges will also make their choice from all
companies entering all categories.

HIGH PERFORMANCE DAIRY FARM

Criteria – UK dairy producers. Demonstrable measures verified by
your records, consultant, vet or other
independent member of the industry.
What are our judges looking for?
We are looking for a farm with high levels of production
and cost efficiency across the board. Whilst maintaining the highest
standards of welfare and a consciousness to
minimise the use of antibiotics where possible. The above average
all-round ­performance would be demonstrated by records of good
physical performance and excellent financial results ­represented
by year on year low production costs in pence per litre (eg NMR
records, or other equivalent) achieved through effective manage-
ment of all aspects of the dairy enterprise.

DAIRY AMBASSADOR OF THE YEAR

Criteria – an individual positively promoting UK dairy
What are our judges looking for?
An individual who represents the industry at a national level,
is respected by their peers and shows a driving ambition to
promote the dairy industry in a positive, creative and successful
way to various audiences. The award is specifically for a dairy
farmer, but others may be considered if the application is
exceptional. The person could be a private individual or
represent an organisation or company.

HIGH FERTILITY FARM AWARD
– an award for high and consistent fertility rates on

Criteria – UK dairy producers – farm owner, manager,
herd manager may enter
What are our judges looking for?
Natural fertility, how do you prepare the ground for your cows to
maximise their natural fertility? We are looking for farmers whose
cows perform, and farmers who value the six week calving interval.
They should have progressive herd health plans, work in partnership
with their vet, use new technologies and ideas, and all should work
in unison to create the right environment to optimise fertility and
pregnancy rates.

What are our judges looking for?
The dairy farmer/business that demonstrates proactive health
and welfare management of youngstock on farm. The farm herd
health plan will be integrated into daily management of the farm,
as will the use of records and any initiatives undertaken. A team/
inclusive approach in the care of the herd should be demonstrated,
with standard protocols for ­routine tasks, regular team meetings and
biosecurity.

TASTE OF EXCELLENCE AWARD IN DAIRY

Morrisons Supermarkets
Criteria – entries from the food industry – farm or processor
– taste tested by food experts and senior product buyers
What are our judges looking for?
We will be asking for entries from the dairy industry, from which we
will select 20 companies to send dairy products through for taste
testing. These include: milk, protein products, yoghurts, ice creams,
butter and cheese, and we will choose a winner in each category
based on the look, feel and ‘tasting quality’ on the day.

CONTRACTOR OF THE YEAR

Criteria – farm or trade contractor working in the
agriculture industry - nomination or self entry.

What are our judges looking for?
We are looking primarily for nominations for this category - for farmers
to let us know of individuals who have really made a difference to
their business in the service they offer. Exemplary skills, and personal
attributes that make this individual stand out from the rest.

success with their enterprise whilst maintaiing the highest standards
of health & welfare, high fertility rates, good average milk yields,
a progressive organic operator.

and is set up to expand that business further. Looking for innovative
businesses that show exemplary courage, ingenuity & entrepreneurial
spirit, seizing opportunities to take advantage of a post-Brexit world.

YOUNG FARMER OF THE YEAR

Criteria – dairy farmers under the age of 35 may enter.
What are our judges looking for?
The future of UK farming is dependent on new farmers entering the
industry, and those who can demonstrate a range of practical skills,
together with a visionary approach to business development, will
undoubtedly be the success stories of the future. By adopting a
business and market-focused approach and embracing new
technologies, the shortlisted candidates will need to show how they
put ideas into practice in order to develop a sustainable business.
Candidates will need to show an entrepreneurial spirit to capitalise on
opportunities, while building relationships within the agricultural industry.
This award category will recognise an outstanding young farmer with
two age ranges, 30-35 and 20-30.

What are our judges looking for?
Providing practical advice to dairy farmers and herdsmen, with a
focus on herd health plans to maximise health and wellbeing.
Working in partnership with clients to meet clear production targets
as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible. Good knowledge transfer
skills to keep farmers informed of technical developments that can
aid production and business. Strong personal communication skills.

What are our judges looking for?
An individual who knows how to get the best from grazed and conserved
grass in order to maximise performance from the grass crop in terms
of milk and or milk solids whilst maintaining high standards of herd
health, welfare and fertility. The winner will need to demonstrate attention
to detail in growing grass as a crop with focus on soil management,
crop nutrition, reseeding policy, herbicides and grazing or cutting regimes.

What are our judges looking for?
This award will spotlight the importance of good staff management
and skilled staff across the whole industry. What makes a good
employer and your business a great place to work? If you think your
company is deserving of an award then put them forward letting us
know what it is that makes them stand out. How do they manage
the business for success whilst keeping employees involved,
empowered and above all fulfilled in their role?
The judges will be looking for businesses who really understand
the crucial importance of people management for business
success, showing a real commitment to attracting the best
candidates from inside or outside the industry; to staff retention,
training and development; individual progression; to involvement,
accountability and motivation to build strong and successful teams.
The winning company or person will demonstrate how they put
staff at the heart of their businesses to deliver improved productivity
and satisfaction.

What are our judges looking for?
Innovation drives the industry forward. Do you or your
company have an innovation you think is worthy of an award, one
that could benefit from the positive promotion surrounding such a
win? This could be a technical innovation aimed at producers or
processors, something that aids production efficiency; it could be
new medicine, it could be a new concept/new way of thinking
– it can also be a food innovation.

What are our judges looking for?
The essential ingredient to a high performance, healthy herd is
accurate nutrition. The ability to achieve the optimum balance is
the key to driving feed efficiency. Feed selection and profitability
go hand in hand – the correct feeding regime makes a significant
difference to milk output, milk quality and of course the sustainability
of your herd.

Criteria – UK Dairy farmers progressively focusing on lameness
prevention
What are our judges looking for?
The judges will be looking for an individual who really understands
the crucial importance of lameness management for animal
well-being and its commercial impact. They must show a real
commitment to reducing lameness and be able to clearly
demonstrate the measures that they have taken has reduced
lameness to very low levels. Judges will particularly be looking for
individuals who understand the different types of lameness and
who have developed protocols for prevention, early detection and
treatment that are demonstrably effective and capable of reducing
lameness to extremely low levels.
