Read The Munich Pact & Neville Chamberlain’s “Peace In Our Time” Speech.
o Answer the following questions – 10 points:
1. What nation, central to the issue, is noticeably absent from the
negotiations?
2. What other nation was not present, but may have been very interested in
the events of this meeting?
3. Speculate as to why PM Chamberlain may have believed that he had
indeed achieved “peace in his time.”
Read Hitler and World War II. Though you will not have any questions assigned from
this reading, it is a worthwhile read.
Lecture on the European beginnings of World War II.

Read Correspondence Between England and Germany Prior to the German Invasion of
Poland.
o Complete the following assignment in a short, ½-page paragraph – 15 points.
1. The British prime minister refers to mistakes Britain made in 1914,
claiming that he wishes to avoid such mistakes in the present time.
a. What mistake(s) is/are he talking about?
b. What course of action are they embarking upon in order to avoid
those mistakes?
c. Explain the German response.

Read Radio Address by Neville Chamberlain, Prime Minister, September 3, 1939.


o Answer the following questions – 10 points:
1. Why does Neville Chamberlain say that a state of war will soon exist
between Great Britain and Germany?
2. According to Chamberlain, Great Britain has attempted to avoid war in
what way(s)?
3. Why have those methods been successful. Apply a modicum of
intellectual effort here.
Read Adolf Hitler: The Obersalzberg Speech.
o Answer the following questions – 10 points:
1. Why does Hitler say that he has to attack Poland?
2. Hitler compares his blitzkrieg to whom?
