INTRODUCTION

Definition of Hammering machine

As a open die hot forging in which billet is compressed and deformed by continuous
blows of upper die. In addition, for a given weight , parts produced by forging exhibit better
mechanical and metallurgical properties and reliability than do those manufactured by
casting or machining.

1. Concept
Hammering is the most widely used industrial as well as construction activity
hammering or screw, metal sheet, parts etc. required a lot of time and effort so here
we proposed an automated hammering system that allows for fully automatic
hammering whenever and whenever needed using the person just needs to insert
workpiece and start the This machine Can be used a for automatic hammering works
as and when needed use here a DC motor consist of a pulley attached to it which is
connectedto a hammering machine . larger pulley for efficient power transfer and to
increase torque this large pulley is connected to a shaft that has a connecting rod is
used to achive laterial motion from the spinning shaft we now connect the order end
of hammer to this connecting a rod througed a mid swinging arrangement in order to
achive desired hammer motion with enough torque we can use a suitable bed where
work piece can be placed

The advance cam operated hammer is a device which can be used for multi-
purpose operation by either automatically of manually it is mainly used of
hammering of workpiece it can also be used for various purpose such an punching
forging bending etc.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Leonardo’s invention the cam hammer is another example of thinking centuries ahead of his time.
This machine would be used extensively several hundreds of years after his death during the
industrial revolution. They would be powered by Steam engine and could hammer at up to twenty
times per second. They were used to draw out the sheet metal for ships and armored machines for
war such as the tanks in world war 1.

Below is his original drawing for the cam hammer –

As you can see it was intended to be hand cranked. This would rotate the cam upon which the
hammer mechanisms rests and follows. When the cam is rotated the weight of the hammer ensures
that the bar connected to it always wants to be tight up against it due to the force of gravity.
Eventually the hammer and its mechanism follow to cam all the way around until the cam suddenly
drops off – this makes the hammer fall also. Below is an animation sowing the cam hammer in
action
Hammers like these would continue to be in use until the early 20th century where they were
replaced by rolling mills, these were much more powerful and efficient at rolling sheet metal down
to its desired dimensions, they rely on the brute force that can be utilized with today’s modern
machinery using hydraulics.

Abstract - This paper discuss about cad modelling, design and analysis of automatic
hammering machine. Our goal for this paper is to design and Fabricate an automatic hammering
machine. And for this, we have calculated the maximum torque, impact velocity for hammering,
torque force and also shear failure in bolt joint. In our project we are using torque force to perform
various manufacturing operation in industries like riveting, upset forging, punching etc. Also time
required for operation is less so it is useful in mass production. In this project we have prepared
solid model of project assembly by using CATIA v5R20 software {Computer aided three
dimensional interactive application}. The snapshots of every component are attached in the file in
design section. The model consists of motor, shaft, hammer, jigs and fixtures. From this we
fabricate conceptual model of automatic hammering machine. Automatic portable hammering
machine is one of the new techniques proposed in design in order to achieve instant Hammering
accurate repetition and impacting, fast Hammering process. It should be user friendly without any

AITS Page 10
risk and worker manual Effort can be used easily automatically. In the past, a labour used hammer
for to drive nail, fit parts, break apart and more. It would be used manually with more effort and
man power used in process. But now a day it is possible to make it process easy by invented
automatic Hammering. There are very clear benefits that the industry sees while using automated
systems. These advantages can be very beneficial in the long run. We assure that our products are
one of the best and they are long lasting.

September. 26, 2002, Published no. US 2002/0133997 A1 This invention relates to the field of
firing mechanisms for single shot rifles, more particularly to a cam operated, falling block firing
mechanisms incorporating a pivoted breechblock link. High power inside the machine is generated
by using the cam by which strong action is generated to the bullets while switching i.e. engaging the
cam switch. So from this review we decide to take the advantage of using the cam as a vital impact
factor of the hammering action by switching the hammer supported ram.

CHAPTER 3
AUTOMATIC PORTABLE HAMMERING MACHINE

3.1 HAMMERING MACHINE

The advance cam operated hammer is a device which can be used for multi-purpose
operations by either automatically or manually. It is mainly used for hammering of work piece. It
can also be used for various purposes such as punching, forging, bending, etc. This advance cam
operated hammer is very essential for doing number of such operations like crushing, riveting,
hammering of larger work piece and cutting of metal. As in forging industry, the temperature of
forging operation is very much higher and it is very difficult to do manual hammering over the
forging metal by manually or hand and also there is always a risk while handling such type of high
temperature base metals or wok piece. So advance cam operated hammer neglects this type of
problems in industry
.

3.2 Types of Hammering machine.

1. Machine forging .
2. Pneumatic Forging machine.
3. Smith forging.
4. Drop forging.
5. Press forging.

AITS Page 12
A) Pneumatic forging machine.

Here we have fabricated the pneumatic forging machine it’s a new innovative concept
forging is the term for shaping Metal by using localized compressive forced cold forging is done at
room temperature on near room temperature Hot forging is done at a high temperature which makes
metal easier to shape and less likely to fracture waim forging is done at intermediate temperature
between room temperature and hot forging temperatures This machine has been main developed
for metal forming to the required shape for and size in this machine we doing the manval process it
consames more time and large amount of man power required for forging by wing this machine we
can save the time and man power requirement in the industries.
Here we have fixed the pneumatic cylinder on the column of the machine which is fixed on the
hammer here.

AITS Page 13
Figure.3.1 pneumatic forging machine

AITS Page 14
B) SMITH FORGING
Open die forging is also known as smith forging in open-die forging, a hammer strikes and deforms
the workpiece, which is placed on a stationary anvil. Open-die forging gets its name from the fact
that the dies (the surfaces that are in contact with the work piece) do not enclosed the work piece,
allowing it to flow except where contacted by the dies. The operator therefore needs to orient and
position the work piece to get the desired shaped surface for specialized operations . for example , a
die may have a round, concave , or convex surface or be a tool to form holes or be a cut –off tool .
open –die forgings can be worked in to shapes which include discs, hubs, blocks, shafts, (including
step shafts or with flanges),sleeves , cylinder, flats, hexes , rounds , plates , and some custom shapes
. open-die forging lends itself to short runs and is appropriates for act smithings and custom work.
In some cases, open-die forging may be employed to rough-shape ingots to prepare them for
subsequent operations. Open-die forging may also orient the grain to increase strength in the
required direction

AITS Page 15
.

Figure.3.2 Smith forging

AITS Page 16
C) Drop forging
Drop forging is the process of Heating metal and shaping it using a metal die cast to produce
products. Manufactures use this process to produce strong and durable parts for a range of
industries.
Forging is one of the oldest metal working practices and it can be traced back to 8000 B C .
Parts can be produced from various types of metal including aluminium, brass and various grades
of steel .
There two type of drop forging open-die dropped forging and closed – die dropped forging and
closed-die dropped forging

Open – Die dropped Forging

Open-die forging is the shaping of heated metal between a top die and bottom die, after every
press of the die the metal taken a new shape.
Open- die forging is usually used for large ,less intricate parts.

Closed - Die dropped Forging

Closed-Die Forging is the most popular method of forging as it allows manufactures to produce
smaller and more intricate parts. These include things like seat belt buckles, climbing gear , spanner
and tractor parts for harvesting.

CHAPTER 4
METHODOLOGY

In designing and hammering machine, a flow of methods had to be used the design and
hammering machine. First of all, a process planning had to be charted out. This acts as a guideline
to be followed so that, the final model meets the requirement and time could be managed. This
would determine the efficiency of the project to be done. Regulating and analysing these steps are
very important as each of it has its own criteria to be followed.

AITS Page 19
Figure.4.1Flow chart diagram

AITS Page 20
The flow chart starts with the introduction. Here, the introduction is first plan to start the
project. The supervisor request for understanding of the project and make some research about the
project title. Student makes project synopsis, objective, and scope of work, and planning.
Once the introduction is done, the supervisor request for the understanding of the project.
Thus, literature review on the title is done thoroughly covering all the aspect of the project. The
medium for this research are via internet and books. Essential information related to the project is
gathered for referencing. In conceptualization, few designs are done using the sketching which is
then saved to be reviewed. Sketch four concepts suitable for the project with a 3-dimensional and
understanding. The sketching is first step for designer used of the time. The designs and concepts
are than reviewed and recalculated to fit the best dimensions and performance of hammering
machine. After four designs sketched design considerations have been made and one design have
been chosen. The selected design sketched is then transfer to solid modelling and drawing using
solid work application. Software is used because it gives a better dimension of hammering machine
compared to manual draw and is much easier to use
However, the drawing using software is just a guideline to be followed to improve the
hammering machine. After draw is done, the project proceeds to next step that is fabrication
process. The finished drawing and sketching is used as a reference by following the measurement
and the type of material needed. The fabrication process that involved is cutting, welding, drilling,
bending and other. After every process was finish, the parts are check to make sure that the output
of the process obeys the product requirement.
If all the parts had been processed, the parts are joined together to produce full scale
hammering machine. Here come the analysis processes. The hammering machine will be test to see
if it fulfils the requirement such as easy hammering, easy to bring anywhere, strength .
During the testing.

For the conclusion, the finish product will be compare with the report to make sure that
there is no mistake on both project and report. After the product and report had been approve by the
supervisor, the report is rearrange and print out to submit at supervisor, the project coordinator and
faculty of Mechanical Engineering. In this stage, the final presentation was also being prepared and
waited to be present.

AITS Page 21
CHAPTER 5
COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN DRAWING

After a design has been selected, the next step in designing process is dimension in . The
design is separated into part by part and the dimensioning process is firstly sketched on the paper.
The dimensioning is based on relevant dimensions and also referring the automatic portable
hammering machine so that the design is fit into other part. After dimensioning, the drawing of the
design is drawn using Solid Works application; at this stage solid modelling method is used. Part by
part solid modelling create according to the dimension done before, after all part create, the 3d
model is assemble with each other base on the design.

Drawing
The drawings are diving into two categories, which are:
Sketching: all the ideals for automatic portable hammering machine are sketched on the paper
to ensure that ideas selection can be made after the selected design choose.
Solid Works Application: The design or concept sketched is transfer to solid modelling and
drawing using Solid Work Application.

Lathes are used in Woodturning , metalworking , metal spinning , thermal spraying , part
reclamation and glass working lathes can be used to shaped pottery , the best know design being
the potter’s wheel. Most suitably equipped metal working lathes can also be used to produce most
solid of revolution , plane surface and screw thread or helices. Ornamental lathes can produce three
dimensional solid of incredible complexity. The workpiece is usually held in place by either one or
two centers, at least one of which can typically be moved horizontally to accommodate varying
work piece lengths. Other work holding methods include clamping the work about the axis of
rotation using a chuck or collet, or to a faceplate , using clamps or does

7.2 ARC WELDING

Arc welding is a welding process that is used to join metal to metal by using electricity to create
enough heat to melt metal, and the melted metals when cool result in a binding of the metals. It is a
type of welding that uses a welding power supply to create an electric arc between a metal stick
("electrode") and the base material to melt the metals at the point of contact. Arc welders can use
either direct (DC) or alternating (AC) current, and consumable or non-consumable

7.2 Arc welding

The welding area is usually protected by some type of shielding gas, vapor, or slag. Arc
welding processes may be manual, semi-automatic, or fully automated. First developed in the late
part of the 19th century, arc welding became commercially important in shipbuilding during the

Second World War. Today it remains an important process for the fabrication of steel structures and
vehicles.

Bolt, is a type of fastener characterized by a helical ridge, known as an external thread or
just thread, wrapped around a cylinder. Some screw threads are designed to mate with a
Complementary thread, known as an internal thread, often in the form of a nut or an object that has
the internal thread formed into it. Other screw threads are designed to cut a helical Groove in a
softer material as the screw is inserted. The most common uses of screws are to hold objects and to
position objects.
