What is 8th grade science?

The purpose of this 8th grade science course is to educate the students in the awesome world
of science through labs, experiments, and other activities. Working together (teachers,
students, and parents) we can make this school year 2019-2020, a wonderful experience that
will prepare the students for their future and hopefully increase their interest in the scientific
world all while becoming responsible and productive citizens.

Classroom Rules:
1. No talking when teacher is giving instruction. [Includes instructions, lecture and when
another teacher/adult is present]
2. Student must come to class prepared with (paper, pencil/pen). No sharpies or permanent
markers allowed.
3. Please be on time. That means in seat writing warm-up when bell rings. Tardies will NOT be
tolerated! If tardy, student will be issued lunch detention.
4. Be respectful to self, teacher and others and their property. (No swearing, teasing or name
calling).
5. Follow all lab safety rules.

Absences/Tardies:

The student shall only be allowed five – non – consecutive written excused absences per
calendar year (pending Board approval).
Additional absences after five shall be unexcused unless excused by the campus principal

Medical Excuses - Attendance code (MED)


This code is to be used for funding purposes when the student is not on campus during the
official attendance time. (Refer to definition for MED)

Doctor’s excuses from Mexico shall not be accepted for MED purposes however they may
be included as excused absences subject to the discretion of the principal..

Homework/Projects:
Will be assigned whenever necessary. Students will be given 10 – 15 minutes to work on
the assignment in class after the teacher has done examples with the student. Homework
will be counted as a daily-work grade, unless otherwise stated by teacher. All homework
is due the next school day or given due date.

Grading policy:
 Major assessments [tests, labs, projects, reports, quizzes, etc.] ------------------------- 60 %
 Daily assessments [notebooks, dailywork, homework, etc.] -------------------------------- 40%

Retests: taken from BISD policy online


a. Retesting will take place upon student failure and student request except for research
papers, major projects, benchmarks, six weeks test(s) and semester exams. It is the
student’s responsibility to make arrangements for the retest. No retests are available for
student who received a “0” for cheating.
b. The student must schedule the retest within five (5) school days after earning the failing
grade, except under extenuating circumstance determined by the principal.
c. The student may raise his/her score to a maximum of 70 on the test by taking the retest.
d. A student may not be retested more than one time for any given original major
assessment.
e. Retesting Procedures apply to all students.

 4th Six Weeks: Earth & Space
 5th Six Weeks: Earth & Space/Living Systems
 6th Six Weeks: STAAR REVIEW/Biology for High School

Science Process Skills are on-going throughout the year. Science Fair Projects will be counted
as a major assessment. Every STEM student is required to submit one by the due date.
