Great news! Last month, the California Department of education
released the results of last spring’s state tests in grades 3-8 and 11
(search “caaspp results” online ). We are very proud of our
students’ achievement. eighty-two percent of Belmont-Redwood
Shores students met or exceeded their grade level standards in
english and 79% did so in math, which is up by 7 and 9 points
respectively from 2015, when our new state standards were first
tested. to provide context for this level of performance, the San
Mateo County averages are more than 20 points lower at 61% and
53% at or above grade level standards, respectively, with growth
of just 5 points in each subject over the same period of time.
Congratulations BRSSD students! We’re proud of you!

And, did you know about some fascinating history, right here in
the heart of Silicon Valley? During, and after, World War II,
Stanford University became part of “knowledge creation,"
according to an article in Business Insider. After the war, Stanford
rented some its land to graduates who began creating businesses
and labs. In 1957, there was an exodus of workers from a
business called Shockley Semiconductor lab. ey wanted to start
their own company, and indeed they did. ey launched a
company called Fairchild Semiconductor, which became an
incubator for tech enterprise. Companies, like Intel and AMD,
became known as Fairchildren.
at’s how this exciting and constantly changing place we call home
got rolling. You know...constant change, kind of like the seasons.

ReSCU Update
ose trucks rolling down Redwood Shores Parkway heading for Silicon Valley Clean Water (SVCW) are a regular reminder
of the progress SVCW is making on its Front of Plant project, which is an important part of the Regional environmental
Sewer Conveyance Upgrade (ReSCU) program.
Once ReSCU is complete, SVCW will be able to efficiently and effectively service their 220,000 customers, and handle
future water and resource recovery as the region continues to grow in population.
e existing SVCW conveyance system components are beyond their useful life. ReSCU is necessary to upgrade
infrastructure, eliminate past reliability concerns, and accommodate changes in wastewater flowrates. Replacement of the
conveyance system has been SVCW’s highest priority due to the system’s age and the on-going need for extensive and costly
repairs, which requires a significant commitment of maintenance staff time.
Crews have been working on the excavation of a 90-foot deep Receiving Lift Station (RLS) shaft. It is now close to 60 feet
deep. is shaft will house the new RLS and the equipment that supports it. at will give SVCW the capacity to pump
wastewater at a rate of up to 80 million gallons per day -- nearly 56,000 gallons per minute!
e raw wastewater from the discharge end of the new gravity pipeline tunnel goes to the new SVCW headworks. e headworks
is a preliminary treatment facility where inorganic materials such as grit and rags that are not processed in the SVCW wastewater
treatment plant are removed from the raw wastewater before it enters the treatment plant. e excavation work involves removing
soil from the interior of the circular excavation support walls that form the vertical RLS shaft.
SVCW has also made progress on the construction of above-grade portions of the new headworks structure. e first level
concrete walls have been poured, supported by the completed headworks structure base slab, completed at the end of September.
eleven projects comprise the ReSCU program, which constitute full replacement and rehabilitation of SVCW’s conveyance
system. ReSCU includes the Gravity Pipeline, Front of Plant, Pump Stations, and Belmont Force Main projects.
