Year of Excavation : 1968 – 1969
Importance in History :
1. The site is referred to in Tamil Sangam literature,
2. It is considered to be an important port of pearl fishery.
Excavation Findings :
1. Soaking jars
2. Inscribed potsherds bearing Tamil Brahmi letters assignable, to 300 BCE to
200 CE were also found.
3. Charcoal samples dating to 785 BCE.

Excavation Findings :
It found out the remnants of the palace of Kattabomman.
Place : Vasavasamudram, Kanchipuram 3
Year of Excavation : 1969 – 1970
Location : is a coastal village in Kanchipuram district and lies eleven miles south
of Mamallapuram, and north of Vayalur
Importance in Ancient History : The exploration revealed conical jars and neck of
an amphorae and proves the fact that this site had trade contacts with Rome
during 1stand 2ndcentury CE.
Excavation Findings :
1. Ring wells
2. Potteries of the kind rouletted ware, amphorae, red ware, red slipped ware,
black slipped ware and brown ware etc.

Place : Anaimalai , Coimbatore district
Year of Excavation : 1969– 1970
Location : The excavations were carried out in Manamboli, a village in the Anamalai
Hills
Importance in History : This excavation has thrown more light on burial type and the
burial antiquities.
Excavation Findings : These objects found were knife and red and black pottery ware
and they date to megalithic period. (1000 BCE to 300 CE).

Year of Excavation : 19670– 1971
Excavation Findings :
1. The present excavation revealed three periods of occupation.
2. The findings are related to the Pallava rule of this region from 6thto 9thcentury CE.
Place : Karur 6
Year of Excavation : 1973 – 1979, 1994 – 1995
Excavation Findings :
1. The important findings are several potsherds with Tamil-Brahmi
inscriptions assignable to the beginning of the Common era.
2. The inscribed potsherds were found along with Roman Amphorae and
rouletted ware of Mediterranean origin.

Place : Panayakulam, Dharmapuri
Year of Excavation : 1979 – 1980
Location : The village is situated on the west bank of river Kanchi popularly known as river
Noyyal, a tributary of the river Cauvery.
Importance in Ancient History : The terracotta seal with the royal emblem of a bow and a
seated tiger, along with an inscription of 7th century CE characters.
Excavation Findings :
1. 50 semi-precious stone beads of various sizes
2. terracotta ear lobes, iron objects, shell bangles
3. terracotta seal obtained from the bottom portion of a pit filled with terracotta lids and cups.
Most probably this pit might have been used as kiln.

Excavation Findings :
1) Square copper coins
2) Adult skeleton in pits

Place : Thondi, Ramanathapuram
Importance in Ancient History : It was a port town during the Sangam period.
Excavation Findings : Potteries and bricks belonging to late period like coarse
red ware were collected
