Nuclear free zone is any area in which nuclear weapons, power plants, or materials are

not allowed.Nuclear-weapon-free zones are an important disarmament tool which

contributes to the primary objective of strengthening regional peace and security and,
by extension, international peace and security.
initial efforts to create an area free of nuclear weapons began in the late 1950s
with several proposals to establish such a zone in Central and Eastern Europe.
Each treaty establishing a nuclear-weapon-free zone includes a protocol for the
five nuclear-weapon states recognized under the NPT-China, France, Russia, the
United Kingdom, and the United States-to sign and ratify.
The topic of a nuclear weapon free zone in congo started when the Organization
of African Unity stated its interest in the establishment of such a zone in 1964. This was
to combat the French testing in the Saharan region, and the growing interest of nuclear
weapons for security inAfrica. The Treaty of Pelindaba was signed in 1997 and came
into effect in 2009. All states in Africa are eligible to be part of the resolution. In 1996, no
African Arab state was willing to ratify the treaty until Israel gave up its nuclear weapon
program.
CTBT: This is a legally binding global ban on all nuclear explosive testing.
Congo signed the Comprehensive Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT)CTBT on 27 january 1997,
shortly after the Treaty opened for signature. It has also signed the Treaty of Pelindaba,
which effectively makes Africa a zone free of nuclear weapons. Rectified in november
26 2013.
The Republic of the Congo has become the 163rd State to ratify the Comprehensive
Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). The total number of State Signatories to the Treaty
stands at 183.
The Treaty prohibits the research, development, manufacture, stockpiling, acquisition,
testing, possession, control or stationing of nuclear explosive devices in the territory of
parties

It focuses on production and use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes without
discrimination and to facilitate the fullest possible exchange of equipment, materials and
scientific and technological information for such purposes,

● to promote regional cooperation for the development and practical application of

nuclear energy for peaceful purposes for sustainable social and economic
development of the Africa continent,
● to keep Africa free of environmental pollution by radioactive wastes and other
