BIOMASS ENERGY
- Biomass is organic material that
comes from plants and animals
- A renewable source of energy
- The energy has emerged as one of
the major alternatives sources of
power generation over the past few
years
ADVANTAGES
1. Renewable
- As the availability of biomass may
not diminish compared to finite fossil
fuel, the alternative source of
energy is considered renewable.
2. Waste reduction
- Biomass energy have a positive
impact on the environment
3. Carbon neutral
- It balances the carbon emissions as
released carbon during the burning
of biomass fuel are again absorbed
by new plants
DISADVANTAGES
1. Expensive
- The construction and operating
costs of a biomass energy plant can
be expensive in relation to
traditional forms of power
generation.
1. Carbon storage
- The time to recapture the carbon
involved in biomass may vary
depending on the type of biomass
2. Environmental damage
Using fuels produced from biomass
results in the release of various
gases such as carbon monoxide,
carbon dioxide, NOx (nitrogen
oxides), VOCs (volatile organic
compounds), which all contribute
to air pollution.
HARNESSING BIOMASS ENERGY
1. Thermal conversion - biomass can
be burned by thermal
conversion and used for energy.
2. Anaerobic decomposition
- Biomass decays and produces
methane, which is a valuable
energy source. This methane can
replace fossil fuels.
3. Biofuel - biomass is the only
renewable energy source that can
be converted into liquid biofuels
such as ethanol and biodiesel.
