RESEARCH PROJECT 7: WEIGHT ESTIMATION
AND STABILITY ASSESTMENT FOR 65M
RESEARCH VESSEL

To determine vessel lightship and deadweight (DWT)

tonnage which include superstructure, structural
members, machinery and equipment, food stock, etc. The
total weight of the vessel is important to determine the
stability and are used for stability assessment at
different loading condition.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
1. To draw vessel general arrangement
(GA) and determine all the location of
machinery and equipment
2. To calculate all the vertical center
gravity (VCG), transverse center gravity
(TCG), and longitudinal center gravity
(LCG) for the machinery and equipment
into Excel Spreadsheet and obtain its
center of gravity (COG)
3. To calculate structural members such
frames, longitudinal girders, strake,
beam, double bottom, stiffener, etc as
per classification rules (in this case
DNVGL) and input all the data in
Maxsurf structure to obtain the total
structural weight and center of gravity
(COG).
4. To input the location of tank such as
sewage, fresh water tank, ballast tank,
fuel oil tank, sludge tank into tank
definition and calculate the maximum
capacity of each tank during arrival
and departure condition.
5. To perform stability assessment for
each loading condition and ensure the
vessel pass all the required criteria
from IMO, MSC, and SOLAS
