Abstract

• Segregation of waste is essential in waste management as segregation

of waste helps in proper collection, processing, disposal, recycle or reuse
of waste.
• In Residential building lot many types of waste can be generated. This
waste can be separated and can be reused or recycled. In residential
waste, it can be separated into two categories: Organic waste and
Inorganic waste.
• Further processing can help in Waste optimization and utilization.
Organic waste can be treated and used as fertilizer or in generating bio-
gas. Inorganic waste can be treated and used as raw material or in
recycling.
Introduction
• Our space for Design Engineering undertaking is Residential Building. We
chose our exploration region as Meadows, a Residential venture of Adani
Realty.
• The Meadows offers 2BHK and 3BHK apartments and covers around 27
acres of area. It also provides various facilities such as jogging track,
sports facilities like football, swimming, etc., gym, security and parking.

• Our Design Engineering venture manages the perception or investigating
of data identified with space. At that point, as indicated by that one issue
is to be chosen and afterward the Design or creative arrangement ought
to be given to take care of or limit that issue.
• We observed activities such as playing, security surveillance, waste
collection, parking, maintenance, etc.
• The environment was free from pollution, well illuminant and clean. The
users were students, owners, employees, workers, maintenance staff,
guards, etc.
• We observed the interaction of users and authorities and objects which
were involved.
• Accordingly, we derived the positive and negative points related to
Meadows.
LITERATURE REVIEW

1. AEIOU Canvas
It is the summary canvas of activities, environment,
interaction, object, and user.
● Activities are goal directed sets of actions—paths towards things people
want to accomplish. This includes the modes people work in, and the
specific activities and processes they go through.
● Environment include the entire arena where activities take place. This
includes the character and function of the space overall, of each
individual's spaces, and of shared spaces.
● Interaction are between a person and someone or something else; they
are the building blocks of activities. This includes the nature of routine
and special interactions between people, between people and objects in
their environment, and across distances.
● Object are building blocks of the environment or key elements. This
includes the objects and devices people have in their environments and
how do they relate to their activities.
● Users are the people whose behaviors, preferences, and needs are being

observed.

PROBLEM FORMULATION
2. Mind Mapping
Mind mapping is the process of putting the ideas or thoughts of group on a base
in simplifying manner or way.

Fig 3. Mind Mapping

3. Empathy Canvas

Empathy Canvas help in visualizing the things or activities as object and helps
in determining positive and negative things.

1. Users are the people whose behaviors, preferences, and needs are being
observed.
2. Stakeholders are the prime user or owner or investor and that also serve as
authorities.
3. Activities are goal directed sets of actions—paths towards things people
want to accomplish. This includes the modes people work in, and the specific
activities and processes they go through.
4. Storyboarding is describing the positive and negative points in simple but
effective manner.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS

1. Ideation canvas
Ideation canvas includes the users, properties, interaction, and solutions
related to problem defined.
We have chosen the lack of waste segregation or treatment as our prime
problem.
1. People- “WHO” centered
2. Activities- “WHAT” centered
3. Situation/context/location- of activity
4. Props/possible solution - objects, technologies or solutions which
may be possible outcomes to any idea/challenge or minimize the
effect of problem.

5. Product Development Canvas

The Product Canvas helps to detail out the features and values of product
or solution. It also includes the customers’ wants, needs and feedback
about product.

PROTOTYPE MODEL

6. Prototype

The prototype is Visual interpretation or presentation of ides or solutions

or products. The prototype is an early sample, model, or release of a
product built to test a concept or process.

Cost estimation
Assumptions:
I. Wet waste generated is 2.2 kg/person/day
II. Pipe diameter is 20 cm
III. Per floor 4 units
IV. Total floor number 17
V. Waste and cost estimation only for one block
According to standard avg. waste generate per day is 2.2kg/capita/day
Total waste generates in one house = 2.2*4
= 8.8 kg
Total waste generates in one block = 8.8*4*17
= 600 nearly
1 kg/hr. is equal to 0.00059 cfm
Required capacity of vacuum pump:
= 600 * 0.00059/0.33 =1.07 cfm
For this one block requires capacity of pump is 1.5 cfm
Cost of vacuum pump (1.5cfm) is: 32000(2 Stage, 1.5 cfm)
Required Length of Pipeline is 52 m.
Cost of pipeline = 52 * 30.6 * 50 = ₹ 79,560 = 80000 nearly
Pump and pipeline cost = 32000+ 80000 =₹ 112,000.
Installment cost =₹ 22,400.
Operating and maintenance cost = ₹ 1120
Total vacuum pump cost = 112000 + 22400 + 1120 = 135520 = ₹ 136000.
Biogas Calculation

Average Biogas generation = 1m3 from 12kg of Kitchen Waste

Total Biogas generation = 50 m3 /day (For 600kg/day waste generation)
Installment Cost for Biogas Plant = ₹ 3500-5500 for capacity 1 m3 /day
Here, Take ₹ 5000. So, Installment Cost = ₹ 2, 50, 000.
Required Length of Pipeline from Vacuum pump is 40 m.
Cost of pipeline = 40 * 30.6 * 50 = ₹ 61, 200 = ₹ 62, 000 nearly
Operating and maintenance cost = ₹ 1000.
Total Biogas Plant cost = 250000 + 62000 + 1000 = ₹ 3, 13, 000.
Merits of existing waste collecting system:
• Lucid
• No skill labor is required
• Easy to manage
• Initial cost is low

Challenges of existing waste collecting system:

• Irregularity
• Lack of authority
• Operation is Time taking and cost is high
• No segregation of Waste
• More storage units are required locally
• Problems due to waste gathering in open like smell, mosquitoes,
etc.
Prevention from Pests and Rodents

The conduits for waste collection from individual household unit are closed
system and have an outlet at storage unit. The inlet have opening inside
household unit and shall only be opened at the time of dumping the waste.
Thus, the closed conduit system prevents the pests and rodents from entering
the waste collection system.
The other opening for removal of foul smell is at terrace area. This opening
can be closed with steel lattice in order to prevent pests and rodents from
entering the system.

Cleaning of Conduit
The waste collection through each household unit is done through vacuum
suction.
This prevents the waste getting stuck inside conduit, though some amount of
organic waste may get stuck.
Thus, to prevent foul smell due to this, Priming can be done on a weekly basis.
CONCLUSION
Segregation of waste aides in legitimate gathering, handling, transfer, reuse or
recycle of waste
Organic waste can be dealt with and utilized as compost or in producing bio-
gas. Inorganic waste can be treated and used as raw material or can be recycled.
The separate duct gives easiness in handling of waste both for users and
workers.
Vacuum pump is required for efficient working and serviceability of waste
collecting duct.
The collection unit are the main center of waste inlet and outlet.
Bio-gas plant helps in achieving bio gas and byproduct is also can be used as
fertilizer.
The inorganic waste collection helps in separating inorganic waste and further
treatment for recycle or reuse can be done. Also, it can be used as raw material
for some industries.
