97, Suzlon’s latest and the most technologically advanced series of wind turbines, a
sustainable solution to unlock India’s vast untapped wind power market, a solution that
could generate more energy even in low wind conditions. Our answer to ‘doing more
with less’. The S9X series marked the beginning of a platform that revolutionized the
wind turbine manufacturing. It redefined not just the Indian wind power market, but
many similar wind markets of the world from Brazil to Australia and from Europe to
South Africa.

Today wind leads the renewable energy share of the world’s power generation mix with
4% of the total energy generation. India has over 100GW of harnessable wind power
potential, of which just 20% has been developed. This presents a huge opportunity for
growth that would power India’s fast paced economic growth. The world’s leading
investors have already realized this potential and have started investing heavily.
As India’s home grown global leader in wind turbine technology, our focus has been the
development of the 80% untapped market. With our profound knowledge of the Indian
market and wind regimes, we realized that the conventional wind turbine designs
proved to be economically non viable in moderate to low wind conditions. This inspired
a need for targeted technology that would reduce the energy cost. When it comes to
S97, ‘doing more with less’ holds true not just for the technology but it means churning
more returns with less investment.

It all started with Suzlon’s S88, the 2.1 MW turbine that established its credence globally
since 2007.
Its asynchronous induction generator technology, bigger rotor diameter and the hub
height, took the Indian wind energy market generations ahead made it a product that
was generations ahead. In 2011, Suzlon launched the S9X series of wind turbines that
were designed to maximize energy generation in the moderate to low wind conditions.
After the worldwide success of S88 and S9X series in countries like India, USA, Australia
and Europe, it was time for us to develop another technological marvel.
And thus was born the revolutionary S97 – The proven solution to make profitable wind
energy investment possible at moderate to low wind locations.

and the hub height of 90 meters. The IEC Class III variant of S97 estimates approximately
XX% improvement in Annual Energy Production compared to the base case of Suzlon’s

The success of S97 reached new heights in 2014, we mean literally. We added an
innovative lattice-tubular hybrid tower variant that stood 120 meters tall, the first of its
kind in the world. We call it innovative for a reason. The lower lattice base of the tower
and the upper steel tubular part makes the turbine significantly lighter. This X% increase
in the hub height meant a substantial Y% increase in the annual energy production. One
can find the first prototype of S97-120H turbine at the Kutch Wind Park which was
commissioned by the Honourable Chief Minister of Gujarat, Mrs Anandiben Patel.
