A Message from the Chairman The Department of Transport’s sixth annual sustainability report, themed “embedding
excellence in everything that we do”, is a reaffirmation of our commitment to
sustainability. The report provides us with a valuable opportunity to reflect on the
progress being made by the DoT, and its stakeholders, to create a sustainable Emirate of
Abu Dhabi, through the development and operation of a world-class transport system.
The year 2014 has witnessed Abu Dhabi’s continued development and growth towards
its vision to create a confident, secure society and to build a sustainable, open, and
globally competitive economy. The DoT in Abu Dhabi strives to realise the Emirate’s
vision of sustainable development and growth through its unrelenting commitment to
excellence in sustainability management.
Building on the progress made in 2014, I am confident that we can achieve the
ambitious plans we have for the future. Our success will depend, among other factors,
upon the support of our stakeholders. Hence, we will work together to make smarter
travel choices to ensure the economic growth, quality of life and environmental
sustainability of the Emirate.
I look forward to engaging with you further on the journey towards our vision of a
transport system that supports a sustainable Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
Thank you,

and assist in the development of a set
of target goals for improvement on
each phase of flight. In 2014, DoT, in
partnership with Etihad Airways, Abu
Dhabi Airports, and Global Aerospace
Logistics, engaged with the U.S. Federal
Aviation Agency to develop plans for
conducting two demonstration flights
by Etihad Airways from Abu Dhabi to
Washington D.C. and return in May 2015.
Operating under a broader programme
known as the “Abu Dhabi Perfect
Flight Program”, the purpose of these
demonstration flights is to employ as
many gate-to-gate efficiency measures as
possible, to highlight the potential for real
reduction in fuel burn and emissions.
Throughout 2015 and 2016, DOT will
continue to work with the General Civil
Aviation Authority (GCAA) and members
of the UAE National Airspace Advisory
Committee (NASAC) to develop and
implement the UAE Airspace Optimisation
Program. This initiative is intended to
deliver increased operating efficiencies
and reduced fuel and greenhouse gas
emissions for all aircraft flying through the
UAE Airspace.

*The fluctuation in the amount of solid waste recycled from 2013 to 2014 is due to two factors: the expansion of Khalifa port and the enhancement of its recycling
capability, and the 2014 recycling of some waste generated and stored in 2013.
**DoT is in the process of setting up a recycling system in its new office building; once this system is in place, the organisation expects to see its recycling return to
previous levels.
