Tutorial 4: Transformation of Stresses (Use of Mohr’s Circle)

Q (1)

A plane element in a body is subjected to the stresses σxx= 100 MPa, σyy= 80 MPa, and
τxy = 28 MPa as shown in Figure 1. Determine analytically, the normal and shearing
stresses existing on a plane inclined at 45 degree to the x axis.

Figure 1

(a) Determine the stresses acting on an element oriented at an angle 30° from the x
axis.
(b) Find the principle stresses and maximum shear stress and their orientations using stress
block (stress element).

Q (2)

An element in plane stress from the frame of a racing car is oriented at a known angle as
shown in Figure 2. On this inclined element, the normal and shear stresses have the
magnitudes and directions shown in the figure.

Determine the normal and shear stresses acting on an element whose sides are parallel to
the xy axes, that is, determine σxx, σyy, and τxy. Show the results on a sketch of an element
oriented at 0°.
Figure 2

Q (3)

A cantilever beam of T-section is loaded by an inclined force of magnitude 6.5 kN as

shown in Figure 3. The line of action of the force is inclined at an angle of 60° to the
horizontal and intersects the top of the beam at the end cross section. The beam is 2.5 m
long and the cross section has the dimensions shown.

(a) Draw the stress block (stress element) at points A and B in the web of the beam
near the support.

(b) Determine the principal stresses σ1 and σ2 and the maximum shear stress τmax at
points A and B.

Figure  3
Q  (4)
A rectangular plate of dimensions 100 mm x 250 mm is formed by welding two
triangular plates as shown in Figure 4. The plate is subjected to a tensile stress of 12.0
MPa in the long direction and a compressive stress of 2.5 MPa in the short direction.

(a) Draw the stress block (stress element) at a point in the weld line.

(b) Determine the normal stress σw acting perpendicular to the line of the weld and the
shear stress τw acting parallel to the weld.

Figure  4

Q  (5)
A simply supported reinforced concrete beam of 4 m length is subjected to an uniformly
distributed load w = 35 kN/m as shown in Figure 5. Dimensions of the beam cross
section are 200 mm x 300 mm in width and depth, respectively.

(a) Draw the stress block (stress element) at point A, B and C.

(b) Assuming that principal tensile stresses at the three points are reached to the
material tensile strength, draw the initial crack showing the crack direction.
