This chapter there are some points related to the research method. They are
research approach and design, source of data, technique of collecting data and technique of
analysis data.

A. Research Approach and Design

This research applies qualitative method for analysis the subject. Qualitative is a
research that uses image data and text as the source of data for technique of collecting data
(Creswell 2015:9). This research about Selma movie as the source of data which movie
contains sound,text and image that is related to Creswell’s opinion which is image data and
text as the source of data.
Qualitative research originally comes from antrhopology, sociology, humanities
and evaluation(Creswell 2015:1), this research to enable researchers to study social
relationship. Selma movie as the main data to be analyzed to find the sociological aspect
especially about racism in the movie. The design that used by the researcher is descriptive
design, that attempt to describe and interpret object in accordance with reality. The
descriptive method is implemented because the data analysis is presented descriptively.

B. Source of Data
In this research, the researcher uses document and the movie as the resources of
data. The document data in qualitative research as a base data research which form still or
moving image (Mathew 2014:1). The document data in this research is movie as a main data
source which forms sound, moving image and kinds of visual data. The movie with the title
Selma as a data to be analyzed that focuses on racism in Selma movie by using sociological
approach.

C. Technique of Collecting Data

The reseacher do some techniques to get the data which form as a document to
complete the analysis. The documentation is a past record. Document can be in the form of
writing, picture or image and the art work of someone. Written documents such as diaries,
life history, criteria and biographies. Documents in the form of images such as a photograph,
moving picture and sketches (Sugiono 2011:329-330). Selma movie as data document to be
analyzed to find out the information that is needed for making this research.
Selma movie to be watched firstly to get the information about the characters and
the situation that happened in the movie. Then find out the information that shows the racial
injustice action and impact on surrounding. Then the researcher summarizes the data based
on the discussion of collecting data.
 D. Technique of Analysis Data
In this research, the researchers uses some of steps in analyzing data. According
to (Watling and James, 2012 : 385 – 395) there are six steps in analyzing qualitative data :
1. Definind and identifying data
2. Collecting and storing data
3. Data reduction and sampling
4. Structuring and coding data
5. Theory building and testing
6. Reporting and writing up research.
