The Role of Social Media

A. Introduction
Social media is no longer new to us all. Nowadays social media users have
spread a lot in the community, teenagers, students and even minors also use social
media. The development of social media is increasing rapidly due to the continued
increase in users of electronic devices such as smartphones, computers, tablets and
others. As a smartphone user, they must have a social media name. Social media is
used as a means for social interaction online on the internet. Social media for its users
is used as a tool to communicate, interact with anyone, as entertainment and various
other activities.
Social media that are currently widely used by people are Facebook,
Instagram, YouTube and Twitter. We easily get the information what we want to find.
Social media is used in accordance with the needs of its users. Although social media
is already very familiar with its users especially among teenagers and small children.
But it must be realized that social media in addition to providing benefits and positive
impacts. Social media can also have a negative impact on users.
Problem statement “What are the positive and negative impacts of using
social media, especially for adolescents and minors? And how to overcome these
negative effects?”
B. Discussion
Social media is an online media that is used to establish interactions that occur
between groups or individuals, such as sharing, and exchanging ideas through the
internet. This social media has a significant impact on the lives of teenagers and
children. This is because, at this time children begin to grow by being surrounded by
devices and social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and
YouTube.
According to Philip and Kelvin Keller, the notion of social media is a means
for consumers to share text, image, video and audio information with one another and
 with companies and vice versa. According to Michael Cross, social media is a term
that describes a variety of technologies used to bind people into a collaboration,
exchange information, and interact through web-based message content. Social media
on average is used by adults, adolescents to children also use social media. But there
are only positive and negative impacts of the use of social media.
The positive impact of social media as humans we certainly need also the
name of information with this social media people will use it as a means to share
information so that we do not lack updates. Now also more sophisticated we can
video calls with families who live far away. Social media can also act as a useful tool.
For example, teenagers are used to search for knowledge on the internet about school
work, for adults to help them show their skills and to look for business opportunities
such as selling online with social media such as Facebook and instragram, it can also
help earn money. In addition, social media can also be used to share positive things
with everyone, for example sharing knowledge and useful tips. And for children, you
can use YouTube for educational and entertainment that is educational but still with
parental supervision.
The negative impact, most people also use social media as they wish and
spread crime. For example, spreading things that contain pornography and this is very
dangerous for children who are underage who use social media without parental
supervision, the occurrence of bullying and this is not very good to imitate. If too
often using social media also makes us addicted and makes us difficult to sleep and
there are also those who use social media excessively for example to show off and
narcissistic. Playing social media that is too excessive can also make us a lazy person,
for example, if it is preoccupied to access social media for hours or even a day, of
course we do nothing but sit and lie down casually.
How to overcome the negative impacts of social media. First of self control,
how our intention to use social media as a positive thing to find the information
needed and establish communication. Second, especially for minors with parental
supervision, it is needed so that children can continue to play and watch according to
their age.

C. Conclusion
The development of social media has a big influence on everyone. In addition
to having a positive impact, social media also has a negative impact. But it all
depends again on each of us how we use social media according to our needs and not
use it in an excessive way and for children to be expected from the supervision of
parents. The point of this is we just take the positive side and leave the negative side
