Course Objectives:
1. To understand the operation of various switch mode power converters.
2. To understand the operation of various resonant power converters.
3. To study various improved utility interfaces

Course Outcomes: After completion of this course students will be able to


1. Analyze the operation of various AC to DC converters (CL-II).
2. Analyze the operation of various utility interfaces (CL-II).
3. Apply space vector modulation techniques to switch mode inverters (CL-II).
4. Calculate the performance parameters of resonant converters (CL-II).

Course Contents:
 AC – DC Converters: Three phase diode bridge rectifiers with RLE load and input and
output filters. Effect of source inductance. Forced commutated pulse width modulated
rectifiers.
 Utility Interfaces: Single phase input current shaping using diode rectifier-fed active boost
converters. Switch mode converters for bidirectional power flow.
 Switch mode Inverters: Space vector modulation. Types of multilevel inverters, diode-
clamped multi-level inverter, flying-capacitor multilevel inverter and cascade multilevel
inverter.
 Resonant Pulse Inverters: Series resonant inverters, half-bridge and full-bridge types,
frequency response of series loaded, parallel loaded and series-parallel loaded series
inverters.
 ZVS and ZCS Converters: Zero voltage switching resonant converters and zero current
switching resonant converters. Two quadrant ZVS converters.
