Round Robin Tournament
● a competition in which each
contestant meets all other
contestants in turn
● each team plays exactly k games
against every other team
● N x (N-1)/2
● Can be used in basketball,
volleyball, badminton, tennis, etc.
● E.g. 8 teams: 8 x (8-1)/2 = 28
games
Exercise Testing
Athletes undergo different testing for tracking of their performances.

For examples:
● Getting heart rate for long
distance athletes.
● Knowing there maximal threshold
will help them make the best out
of their performance.
● Can get by computing and
estimating
Graphing Data for Progress
● To track athletes’
performance and progress
through time.
● Each curve is based on
higher performance scores
(which would be on the
Y-axis or vertical axis)
representing better
performance than lower
scores.
Biomechanics
● the science of movement of a living
body, including how muscles,
bones, tendons, and ligaments work
together to produce movement
● Measure of angles, distances, and
different aspects of a skill so that
the athlete will train in the best of
his/her ability.

Math and Weightlifting
● How do we know how much weight to lift for a given exercise?
● How do we know how many times (“repetitions”) we should do?
● How do we know how many sets of exercises to do ?
● How do we know how long to rest in between sets ?
● How many times should we go to the gym a week ?
● How long should we rest between trips to the gym ?
Math is used to calculate the amount of weight being lifted.

- Key to know and understand to know what you can and cannot lift, reducing
injuries, and maximizing gains.

jumping, running, throwing
and walking.

● The oval has 2 straight 100m

and 2 curves of 100m

● An oval has 8 lanes and is

equivalent of 400 meters

Math and Badminton
● History
- 5th century BC, the people in china then played a game called ti jian zi.
- Ti jian zi- kicking the shuttle.
- the objective of the game is to keep the shuttle from hitting the ground without
using hand.
History
● Five centuries later
- a game named Battledore and Shuttlecock was played in china, Japan,
India and Greece.
- Battledore- paddle.
- It was a game played using a battledore or a paddle to hit the shuttlecock
back and forth.
- By the 16th century is had been a popular game among children in England
History
- In Europe this game was known as jeu de volant (flying game).
- In the 1860s, a game called Poona was played in India.
- This game is much like the Battledore and Shuttlecock but with an added net.
- In 1873, the Duke of Beaufort held a lawn party in his country place,
Badminton.
- the new party sport became known as "the Badminton game".
How to play
● hit the shuttlecock over the net and have it land in the designated court areas.
● if your opponent manages to return the shuttlecock then a rally occurs.
● Winning the rally
- when you force your opponent to hit the shuttlecock outside of the area

- When the shuttle hits the net

- Or when your opponent was not able hit the ball to go across the net and
onto your side
Scoring system
● A match consists of the best of 3 games of 21 points.
● Every time there is a serve – there is a point scored.
● The side winning a rally adds a point to its score.
● At 20 all, the side which gains a 2 point lead first, wins that game.
● At 29 all, the side scoring the 30th point, wins that game.
● The side winning a game serves first in the next game.
The court
● The whole court is rectangular and divided into halves by the net.
● The doubles court is wider than the singles court, but both are the same
length.
● Another confusing thing to new players, would be the shorter service length in
doubles.
Biomechanics of smash
● Preparation Phase

Legs should be spread apart to widen the base of support with bent knees to lower
the athlete’s center of gravity.
•Backswing Phase

Racket arm is stretched as far back as possible to provide optimal momentum for
forward swing.

Newton’s 3rd Law:

“For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction”.

Reaching optimal height when jumping provides a greater trajectory angle when
making contact at the highest point with the racket.
● Forward Swing and Follow Through Phase

The further the racket arm is behind the athlete the more momentum can be
generated increasing the power when making contact with the shuttle.

Racket should follow through after making contact with the shuttle to put maximum
force in the shot.
Anticipation
Probability
Is the likelihood of something happening in the future
Equation

Probability = total number of ways achieving success
