A. Medieval Philosophy
1. Prove God’s existence through “St. Aquinas’ Fifth way”
St. Aquinas’ fifth way is the “Argument from design”. Thomas proved that our
world isn’t easy to make and so there must be a person or a special being who made
this and us, humans. I do believe in Him because God is the only one who can see us
from above and He is the only one who knows what we are capable of doing. Just like
the earth He designed it by not too near from the sun and not too far so that all the living
things can live here. Now, we are enjoying this earth with a normal level of warmth and
cold. St. Thomas’ believed that it was God who designed the earth and put us here to
live.
2. Religion or Science? Explain.
Science and religion are shown to disagree with each other. As for me, I believe in
religion because that is how my faith placed me. I believe in God above all because as I
pray to Him all my worries He then replied me with this verse; John 14:1 “Do not let your
heart be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.” And for that I find my hopes
up, believing that every actions I take, God is always with me and will never abandoned
me. That if you only believe in Him, all your anxieties and things that’s troubling you will
never win because you have your God that loves you and cares for you. Living a life
without God is impossible, because God gives color and eternal life.

3. Culture of making a choice between religion and science.

Nowadays, our country is experiencing this vast number of teenage pregnancy and
young mothers are having a hard time supporting their child on their own, the only solution
they see is to abort their child so that they can escape from their responsibilities. In our
culture we do not practiced abortion because it is against the law of God. Aborting one’s
life is a grave sin and as a Christian we do not do that. According to science, abortion is
one of the prevention to lessen our population that would help our economy become
better. It will help our country be a better place to live, not only in our generation but also
to our future.

B. Modern Philosophy
1. Why did Rene Descartes look for a solid certain foundation of knowledge?
He looked for a solid foundation because he was not satisfied with the state of
philosophy and science during his day. According to him “It has been cultivated for
many centuries by the most excellent minds and yet there is still no point in it which is not
disputed and hence doubtful.” His hope, then, was to find a solid foundation for scientific
knowledge.

2. What did he do to look for this undoubtable foundation of knowledge?

He said that he will resolved it by undertaking studies within himself and to use all
the powers of his mind in choosing the paths he should follow.

3. What do you think is the surest truth in the world which you can never doubt no
matter what? Explain your answer.

For me, it’s DEATH. It will never doubt anyone of us because we all know that it is
our destination. May it be the rich or poor, strong or weak good looking or not we are all
going to die.
