1. What happened? / 一般过去时
• The simple past / past simple tense is used to describe a completed activity that happened in the past.
• In the text from lesson (A), all the verbs which tell us what happened to the writer when he was on
holiday in Italy are simple past tense.
Last summer, I ______ (go) to Italy. I ______ (visit) museums and ______ (sit) in public gardens.
A friendly waiter ______ (teach) me a few words of Italian. Then he ______ (lend) me a book. I
______ (read) a few lines, but I _______________ (not understand) a word. Every day I _______
(think) about postcards. My holidays ______ (pass) quickly, but I __________ (not send) cards to
my friends. On the last day I ______ (make) a big decision. I ______ (get) up early and ______ (buy)
thirty-seven cards. I ______ (spend) the whole day in my room, but I ___________ (not write) a
single card!

2. Direct object & Indirect object / 直接宾语与间接宾语
• Many English verbs can take two objects:
• The direct object usually refers to an object.
• The indirect object usually refers to a person and comes first.
For example: I lend her some money. (indirect object – her, direct object – money)
Exercise: Compare the example sentences. Write other sentences in a different way.

2. Direct object & Indirect object / 直接宾语与间接宾语
• Many English verbs can take two objects:
• The direct object usually refers to an object.
• The indirect object usually refers to a person and comes first.
For example: I lend her some money. (indirect object – her, direct object – money)
Exercise: Compare the example sentences. Write other sentences in a different way.
