VESUVIUS - HEAT FLOW PROGRAM INSTRUCTIONS

OVERVIEW
The Vesuvius Heat Flow program, HeatflowV1.21, is designed to be a quick, easy and
accurate method for performing heat balance calculations on refractory and insulation
systems. Features include:

• Operates on Microsoft Excel

• Quick and easy addition/modification of products
• Metric/English operation modes
• Internal storage of product data

HeatflowV1.21 conforms to the ASTM C680-89 specifications for “Determination of Heat

Gain or Loss and the Surface Temperatures of Insulated Pipe and Equipment Systems
by the Use of a Computer Program.”

HEATFLOW CALCULATIONS

The Heat Flow table provides the following default setting:

Ambient Temp. 80 (F)

Windspeed 0 (MPH)
Emissivity 0.95

Construction Sidewall
Units English

Make changes to the default settings as necessary.

The default emissivity value is appropriate for Black Paint on Stainless Steel.
Construction using other materials at the cold face can significantly change the
emissivity value. For example, aluminum jacketing has an emissivity of 0.2 to 0.3.

Construction.

Enter the lining design using the materials provided in the drop down lists.
Lining can be designed with a maximum six layers.

Enter the thickness for each material and the hot-face temperature. The proper units are
indicated (in., cm, °F, °C)

If desired, check the Calculate Freeze box and enter the appropriate Freeze
Temperature.

Click Calculate . Heat flow results will be provided in a table and as a

thermal profile. See top of page 5.

ENTER DATA

HeatflowV1.21 uses a curve-fitting algorithm to generate 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th order
polynomial curves to fit the raw data entered. These curves, and the raw data, are
displayed on a graph, allowing an appropriate conductivity curve to be chosen. The
coefficients of the polynomial curve are stored in the program’s database, along with the
material’s name, manufacturer, data source and density.

Enter the thermal conductivity information in the table provided. At least three data
points should be entered. The program allows a maximum of ten data points.

Click Calculate once the table has been filled out. A graph showing
Thermal Conductivity vs. Temperature will be provided. See top of page 8.
