OVERVIEW
The Vesuvius Heat Flow program, HeatflowV1.21, is designed to be a quick, easy and
accurate method for performing heat balance calculations on refractory and insulation
systems. Features include:

MAIN MENU
Click HeatFlow Calculation to perform a heat flow calculation using products that
already exist in the database.
Click View / Delete Data to view the thermal conductivity data or to delete a
product that exists in the database.
Note: The Main Menu screen displays the number of products that exist in the
database. Periodic updates will include additional products as well as
modifications to those products that are already in the database.

The default emissivity value is appropriate for Black Paint on Stainless Steel.
Construction using other materials at the cold face can significantly change the
emissivity value. For example, aluminum jacketing has an emissivity of 0.2 to 0.3.

Enter the lining design using the materials provided in the drop down lists.
Lining can be designed with a maximum six layers.
Enter the thickness for each material and the hot-face temperature. The proper units are
indicated (in., cm, °F, °C)
If desired, check the Calculate Freeze box and enter the appropriate Freeze
Temperature.

ENTER DATA
HeatflowV1.21 uses a curve-fitting algorithm to generate 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th order
polynomial curves to fit the raw data entered. These curves, and the raw data, are
displayed on a graph, allowing an appropriate conductivity curve to be chosen. The
coefficients of the polynomial curve are stored in the program’s database, along with the
material’s name, manufacturer, data source and density.
Enter the thermal conductivity information in the table provided. At least three data
points should be entered. The program allows a maximum of ten data points.
Click Calculate once the table has been filled out. A graph showing
Thermal Conductivity vs. Temperature will be provided. See top of page 8.
