Evaluation Criteria for Critique

Overall Appearance Points


Are the three required sections addressed and labeled? /1
(Introduction, Analysis, Relevance/Applicability)
Is the paper double-spaced with a 1” margin in Times New Roman 12 pt font? /3
Does the paper have a title page and no more than 3 additional pages?
The title page includes
* The article author(s) and title
*The author of the critique,
*The instructor’s name, course name and due date
(3-point penalty for each additional page)
Is a copy of the article attached with evidence of “close reading” /4
Is the critique checklist attached /2
● Does each statement on the checklist match the content of the critique?

Content of the critique


Introduction /10
Does it mention the name and published year and author of the article in the
critique? Is the author’s thesis statement stated?
Is the article clearly summarized (problem/issue, outcomes)?
Is there sufficient information given to catch the reader’s attention?

Analysis /10
Is there a thorough analysis of the article?
Are all four points addressed :
▪ What is the author’s purpose for writing (inform, persuade, recommend, etc)?
▪ Who do you believe the author’s target audience is?
▪ What are the author’s supporting points? Do they directly support the main idea? Are they based
on research; or are they simply someone’s opinion?
▪ Briefly discuss the research methodology (Did they only do research by referring to other
articles or did they do their own experiments?)
Are there at least 3 other points that the critique author is addressing?

Relevance/Applicability /10
Has the author addressed the following questions in a well thought out analysis:
● Is the author’s article effective? Why or why not? Do you agree with the author’s
conclusions? Why or why not?
● What implications (resulting effects) do the main points and conclusions present to the
scientific (or other) community, people, environment, etc? How could you use the author’s
findings in your future studies?
● Can you apply the findings to your own life? If so, how? If not, why not?
● Would you recommend this article to others? Why or why not?
The Writing & Documentation /10
Is the critique easy to understand; does it appear to have been proofread
● There are no typos
● There are no grammar errors
● There are no word choice errors
Proper use of APA in-text citation is used when referring to the article in the
Analysis and Relevance/ Applicablity sections.
● There is a Reference page with correct use of APA referencing.
● All references have corresponding in-text citations (and vice-versa).
