1 COURSE SUMMARY
This course deals with the role of materials used in construction, different components of
building and methods of construction. The primary focus is on materials, their types, their
properties and their intrinsic relationship to structural systems and environmental
performance. Students will develop a fundamental understanding of the building componenets
from foundation level to the roof level. Also they can understand relationship of materiality to
construction systems and techniques, how building materials are manufactured, and how a
material’s modular form, dimensions and intrinsic qualities influence the design process and
will also know how to select different material usages for different parts of a structure.
Students will acquire knowledge on recent advances in building materials. On successful
completion of this course, student should be able to select the use of appropriate material for

On successful completion of this subject, the students should be able to:
G1 Understand the different types of foundation and to select a suitable foundation for a
structure.
G2 Become aware of the building components.
G3 Identify types of building Materials and their classifications.
G4 Describe the types of masonry wall, bonds used and process of plastering.
G5 Explain the concept of a load bearing structure and a framed structure.
G6 Develop a knowledge on recent advances in building materials.
3 DELIVERY PLAN
TOPIC: Introduction
SUB-TOPICS: Components of building - Foundation-Meaning, Functions, Types –Shallow –
stepped, inverted arch, raft, grillage, cantilever. Deep – pile, pier, well. Masonry units –
Meaning, Components and functions – Walls, Floors, Roofs.
